8GB vs 6GB DDR2

I have a 6GB mix of OCZ Reaper 8500 DDR2 and 9200 DDR2 running at 857mhz, 4-3-3-5-2T in my system and it's great. I also happen to have a 2x 2GB kit of G.skill around here.

I am contemplating swapping the 2gb of 9200 in my system for the 4gb of G.skill giving me 8GB instead of 6GB. I'm mainly just curious if I can make it work more than anything, but curious if there is any real point of 8GB vs 6GB of DDR2.

Thoughts?

If its just an experiment go for it and have fun, but unless you really need the extra 2gb, I doubt that you're going to see increase in performance...

Well, I mainly do gaming, HD video editing, Phtoshop and 3d rendering so it likely wouldn't hurt... but yeah, mainly an experiment.

You will not see an increase in performance. You will experience an increase in capability.

You have already experienced the increase in performance at > 2GB.

Well, I just tried it out. I now have a mix of 4GB OCZ Reaper 8500 and G.Skill Pi Black 6400 running at 857mhz, 4-3-3-5-2T and all seems well. Volts are slightly high for the G.skill but I haven't experimented with getting it down yet. I'm surprised this even worked.

be careful with the GSKILL, it dont fair well with higher voltages...:(

ive been through 2 4gb sets of HZ 800mhz sticks, they just crap out without warning.

as others have said, you wont see a boost in performance over 3gb IMO. ;)

What voltages were you running them at? I have mine at 2v for the time being, but will tinker with that a bit.

Rated for 1.9v so I was thinking 2.0v wasn't too bad. My OCZ kit is good up to 2.3

you might be alright with the ''PI'' sticks, the ICs may take a little more punishment, but out of all RAM sticks ive had the GSKILL were the only ones ive had die on me. ;)

I think I'll give them a shot, and if the G.Skills crap out on me I'll just stick my 2GB of OCZ 9200 back for the original 6GB.

the GSKILL's should have ''lifetime warranty'' anyway, if they crap out send them back, they will replace them....;)

i have 8gb OCZ GOLD, theyre sturdy sticks..... the ''EVP'' does allow quite a lot of voltage adjustment but they clock like crap :(

the highest i can get em is about 900mhz @ 6-6-6-18, theyre not very good for an OCer, but fine for everyday use at rated speeds....

I couldn't get my OCZ 8500 / 9200 mix up over 857 with any sort of stability so I went the other direction with the 4-3-3-5 timings. All in all I'd rather the mHz as I care more about game FPS than benchmarking scores but I'll take what I can. I suppose the main thing is stability. :P

I have a set of GSKILL pc2-6400 as well, and I would try to match the ram timings close to the GSKILL if you can.
