What's your Internet Speed?

Big Tom,
Over the pond it look's like only 1 isp has started trials on docsis 3.0 and so there's not much information about yet. I can see from a speed table on this that it can deliver a high speed.

Contract for 18 months ?
Then your kinda fubar if another competition decided to provide you with better connection tbh
not really, we had our fiber connection installed a couple of months ago, on an 18 month contract, so renewing it to 18 months again will only extend our existing contract by two months.
for up to 6 months at 300mbnot a bad deal in my eyes.
its the up to bit im dubious about. that could be anything from a week at 300 to 6 months at 300.
we will have to see what they offer in terms of time scale before i do renew.

ok further update to the trials.
slow start then decent speeds on offer.
and a free month too, well done BT :D thanks
Dear BT Infinity Customer

Thank you very much for agreeing to join the trial of higher speed BT Infinity. If you are willing to help us improve our fault diagnosis processes we would like you to join our trial within 1-3 weeks, in the phase of the trial which is normally open only to BT employees.

Initially we would like you to trial our 160Mbps product, with the opportunity to trial our 300Mbps product later.

We ask that you to agree to contact or be contacted by our help desk to talk so that they can go through our revised diagnostic procedures (we will provide the necessary contact details). This phone call could take up to 20 mins and will be extremely valuable to us in our plans to improve the customer experience of BT Infinity.

If you are happy to do this, we will give you 1 month's free rental of BT Infinity 100Mb (worht £35). This will show up as a credit on your bill, a month after you have been upgraded.

Please let me know if you are happy to do this,
Many thanks again,

Regards

BT Retail Fibre Trial Team

They have a FTTP trial running on Plusnet who I am with, I am not in an area where it's enabled, but a few of the guys on there are getting some decent speeds. The best result one guy has had was 344meg down and 28meg up.

I thought my connection was fast for downloading games, but 344meg would be insane!

PP21,
Aye that's for sure speeds around now are crazy when you think back a few years. With all these speed increasing I hope BT has all the Node's upto spec and they have put in a good backhaul framework for their network. I think they have as not see many problems but in a few weeks we will see how their Infrastructure will stand up to all the pressure it's going to get.

Hi there
problem isn't the SPEED anymore --it's the CAPS that ISP's are insidiously applying.

Fortunately when I'm in the U.K I use SKY --still Uncapped but if you download or even just PLAY a lot of proper HD quality video (FULL HD) then you eat an insane load of bandwidth very quickly -- and more and more companies are "Capping" connections or applying totally vague criteria such as "Fair Use Policy" -- which is probably just as transparent as a Bank refusing credit based on some totally imponderable data obtained from a credit agency like Experian etc -- the old Soviet KGB was actually quite OPEN in comparison. !!

The thread should perhaps have an offshoot as to where people can still get UNCAPPED monthly quotas.

Cheers
jimbo

Seems about right, it is a 100 mbit/s down, 6 mbit/s up connection, one of the fastest (affordable) here in Germany, where the ISPs don't really understand what upload might be used for.

Since it is over fibreoptic cable, I totally wish for snychronous up- and download but meh....that is too expensive

BT and Sky are 2 ISP's that operate uncapped package's in the UK and since ISP's have had to block access to torrent site's usage here has gone down by a large amount, in fact I was shocked by want bandwidth was being used for P2P torrent sites and that has gone back into the pool. I use around 200Gb per month unless my Son or Grandson appears and then it goes up a lot.

Hi Paul,

Because the ip profile for my line according to BT Speed tester is 77.43. As far as I know it's not possible to get speeds faster than the actual ip profile.

PP21,
I believe that if DLM is working correctly in the New Dslam and your line has low errors and not ali cables and you are not far from the Dslam then DLM will give the best speed it can and that the IP Profile is only set for a safety reason for BT to tell customers that's the faster your line can go. If my understanding is wrong please tell me. In my signiture my average speed for June was higher than my IP Profile setting and it was the same for May.
I think the problem is that there is no speed tester out that give's an actual correct reading.

There hasn't been any drop in demand for p2p after the pirate bay was blocked, as the pirate party opened before it was blocked.

Virgin Media also operate an uncapped policy, but all 3 are subject to fair use policy, that mean once you have downloaded a certain amount over a certain period of time you get your broadband throttled.
