Hey,

So, ever since I got the update for it in Windows Update, like a few months ago, I could never install IE9 on my computer. I have tried every possible means to install it.

-Download the modified (B00IE8/IE9) package
-Download the 32Bit (x86) Upgrade package
-Using Windows Update

And after multiple attemtps, I'm still opening IE8. Don't get me wrong, I have Google Chrome and Firefox, but I would like to have everything on this computer upgraded so I don't need to look at it in Windows Update.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Regards,
-TPS

1. In my opinion, any version of Internet Explorer *shudders* sucks. Chrome > Firefox > Safari > Internet Explorer.
2. If you want your computer upgrade without the windows update messages, right click the update and select "Hide". Or alternatively uninstall Internet Explorer.

Thats all I can help you with. :)

Note that while you may have attempted to install IE9 and have failed, it does generate log files in \Windows whether the install fails or succeeds. The files will be IE9*.log files, the * representing a string (main, install, etc). Those log files can tell you (or us, if zipped and uploaded) what happened during the installation attempts.

Roncerr - Well the error message says that this is unknown to Windows when I try using Windows update.

Mintos45 - I thought uninstalling IE was dangerous to your computer??

Cluberti - Could you give me the direct location to the log files?

There is usually some general advice offered even with "unknown errors". You can't actually uninstall IE. If you have IE9 listed in "Programs and Feature" it can be uninstalled and the system should revert back to IE8. If IE9 is not listed in the first pane of Programs and Features", you can go to the link "Turn Windows Features on or off" and uncheck IE to hide IE. (It may be listed there as IE8 or IE9 depending on what is currently installed.)

I would make sure that IE9 is not installed and that IE8 is listed and checked in "Turn Windows..." and that you can use IE8 with no problems. Then do the command prompt check "sfc /scannow". You can also do the disk cleanup and tools/check offered by right-clicking on the c: drive. When you feel the computer is ready to attempt an IE9 install, I'd do it in "clean boot mode" to be sure nothing from third parties is running in the background during the install of IE9. Same goes for any "Cumulative Security Updates" offered by Windows Update.

Nope, internet explorer is kinda like an extra "addon" to your computer - it isn't required...

Well, I'll work on what you suggested in the morning Roncerr. I'm a bit tired now. Also I can't uninstall it because it isn't in my programs and features section.
