hi

I have Windows 7 32-bit and I am going to do the re-arm thing to make it last 120 days. Once this period is used up, I know I can just do a reinstall to start it all again, but is this illegal?

Of course if it is, then I will just buy it like I did with XP and Vista.

Thanks,

Mani

I would say this is legal. I had a copy of server that was only good for 60 days and it said you could just reinstall it after that time if you wanted to continue using it past 60 days. It was distributed with a book for learning server so you could take the certification exam and came from microsoft.

So I would imagine this is the same thing. But the fact you have to reinstall every so often is what keeps something like this from being a real problem for microsoft.

After all it's not like you would want to keep reinstalling the OS over and over.

You could read the Microsoft Software License Terms EULA that you agreed to in order to install the OS. Then, you would know.

If you're going to do that, build a copy with all your programs/settings installed. It'll save you some headaches.

I have already purchased it using pre-order discount. I wanted to know if reinstalling for this purpose was legal, if it was then I would have cancelled the order. :)

You seem to be suggesting that I am trying to avoid paying using non-legal methods, which is not the case, try and read the thread title clearly next time.

I paid for XP, Vista and now Win7. :)

then you go on to say that if it was, you were going to cancel your order ... so yes it sounded like you were trying to get something without paying for it... if on the other hand you had already ordered the upgrade version, then what exactly was the reason for your post??

lol what's wrong with getting something you want for nothing if it's legal?

but clearly this isn't, so I will just go ahead with the order. I think I've been perfectly reasonable here...:)

Edit: thread solved.

Edit 2: Added "you want" on the first line to reduce sarcastic remarks!

No matter whether you made a purchase or not...actually possessing RTM now is not legal. Beta versions were released for everyone to try. RTM is the final code....what you purchased to receive in October. It is not even released to Technet or other MS subscription sites....so any copy of RTM is, in fact, illegal to possess today unless you are an OEM partner.

By your question it is clear you're not a Technet or other MS subscriber nor an OEM partner. So, in that case...it is NOT legal.

That's ok Mani,

In principle I agree with you there's nothing wrong with what you asked or the way you asked it.

I seconded Tews remark about you denying it.

If it is a loop hole, it is legal and since all big shot's and criminals use loop holes, why shouldn't we?

Although the uela doesn't shed a clear light on this, I think it is not legal and therefore you meet some resistance here. :D

I was talking about the reinstalling thing being legal, your saying something else. But anyway, I know now what I needed to know so problem solved. :D

Anything anyone does under any circumstance is neither legal nor illegal until there is a complainant, petitioner or plaintiff and the due procees of law is applied. A court decides. Often, the cost of prosecution is weighed against a perceived loss when considering a remedy for that loss.

I am sincerely curious... can you provide me any examples of an individual prosecuted for using an "illegal" copy of Windows?
