BSoD Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout fail

My system always runned pretty smooth, running BF4 on high setting with no problem, but last week my computer got pretty hot playing Borderland 2 and crashed on a BSoD. Now every time I start the game after 5 or 10 min playing I crash on the same BSoD : Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed.

I run a Toshiba laptop Qosmio X870 equipped with a Geforce GTX 670M.

-I've tried several drivers roll-back as well as a re-install of the latest version : 337.88. Always the same crash, on some older version of drivers the crash only occurs quickly.
-I've tried re-installing windows, same result, crash after 5 to 10 min.

I've tried the windows hotfix for this problem : microsoft fix it 50848 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2665946
But still got the same crash, the game only freeze a bit longer before I got the BSoD

I run on directx 11 version and my windows 7 Home premium 64bit is up to date

I haven't tried any other game then borderland 2, but before the overheat it was running smoothly. The system is running good and I'm not overheating when a crash occurs (at least not my CPU cause it's the only one I monitors) and my fan don't even run at max speed. No lag in game, everything is normal before a crash.

I think the heat may have damage my GPU, but I wonder if here is any way to test it, or if any other thing I should try before I go on with a GPU replacement.
I've read on the windows help to try and put a longer timer value for the display driver in the registry but not tried yet, I'm not quite sure how to do it correctly.

So your nvidia Drivers are still flagging up.

Lets try this, Remove all your current Nvidia Drivers, Re-boot and Install These:

NVIDIA DRIVERS GeForce 337.88 Driver WHQL

337.88 is the version I'm currently running

Every time I follow the clean driver install instruction via driver sweeper. I've try 314.22 as I read it was the most stable version and still the same problem occurs.

I can run FurMark for several min, after about 15 min the GPU run at 80 C and the temperature don't increase anymore. One strange thing is that FurMark tell me I got a Quatro 5010M when really it's a GTX 670M as stated by the windows device manager.
Some times, with older drivers (like with version 314.22) I try to open Nvidia control panel and it tells me I got no GPU install...

I've re-install and tried Diablo 3, same problem, crash after about 5 min, GPU temperature at the time of crash is about 50 C so I really don't think it's an heating problem, unless my GPU was previously damaged by overheating, as I stated in the first post. Since the problem first occurs after a bad overheating of the laptop and not a new driver installation... I'm starting to really think my GPU have been damaged.

Really I don't know where to go from here !

Since this is a laptop, I think you should try the drivers from Toshiba instead of from Nvidia.

There is a Microsoft fixit for this here,

sorry but I already tested it and it's not working.

I've uninstall the GTX 670M from the windows device manager, running only with the HD graphics 4000. I could run Diablo 3 on low setting with no lag and it never crash. As soon as I re-install the GTX 670M, I could run Diablo 3 on high setting for much longer than before. It finally crashed but not from a BSoD, only freeze-up and I had to reboot. After the reboot the laptop freeze up on desktop, had to unplug the battery to reset the BIOS in order to boot correctly. But then the system don't recognize my GPU no more, Nvidia control panel tell me : Nvidia displays setting are not available, you are not currently using a display attached to an Nvidia GPU. Just like my driver would have get corrupted.

I think I found a working way to fix my GPU. Nvidia is using a system call GPU boost used to control Clock speed of the GPU in reel time. I think that's why my system was crashing only after a few minute running a game, when the clock speed increased too much.

What I did is installing a program call Zotac Firestorm who control the GPU speed and Underclocked my card 200 Mhz. I've passed from : 570Mhz to 400Mhz in core, 900Mhz to 700Mhz in shader and 3000Mhz to 2800Mhz for the memory. For now everything seems stable and I haven't got any crash in a few hours of play. I'm only playing Borderland 2 and Diablo 3 for now so I'm not having performance issue even with the underclock active, but I guess I would become a problem with more demanding games.

I don't know if I've done this right but for now it's the only working technique I've found to play these game without crashing.
