Failure to install a bunch of updates

I have been trying to install a bunch of windows updates, but every time I try it gets to 15% configured, then fails. It shuts down and restarts my computer and gives me a message that the updates failed. I'm not sure what to do here.

We need to know the actual failure message - right-click on some of the updates, and click View Details - post the error number quoted there.

Please check that - it's not a valid code.
On the basis that the code is probably 80071A90 it seems that you have teh same problem as bondimedical3 - but he should still create his own thread to avoid confusion.

I ran the fixit and it didn't do anything- it still gets to 15% when I turn on my computer and then said "failed to configure updates"

I assume you've already tried the MATS automated fixit, so we'll go to the CheckSUR tool next.


Please download and run the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 (make sure you get teh right version!)

then zip the CheckSUR.log and attach it to your reply so I can take a look.

The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and will exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.
The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Check the CHKDSK results by looking in Event Viewer - WIndows Application logs, Wininit source for the results.

The CHKDSK is about as expected - nothing too serious, so your HD is probably fine.
The SFC appears clear as well.


Now run the CheckSUR tool

I downloaded the CheckSUR tool from the microsoft website. It was a .msu file that installed some kind of hotfix.

It found no problems.

What security sotware are you running?

Have you tried running the updates in Safe Mode with Networking, or in a Clean boot, as suggested in Windows Update error 80071A90 ?

I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials.
I'll try running from safe mode soon.
