Solved Samsung SSD vs. Sandisk

Try running ATTO benchmark. I have a Samsung 830 and I get better results running ATTO than AS SSD and I don't use Crystal Disk Mark.

I just ran the Atto test.

It looks to me, as though the Write rates are still very low. Correct?

Check that the firmware is up to date and also makw sure the cable is rated fot 6gb.

Yes, ATTO should provide the best numbers that the drive can produce. Not "real world" numbers, in my opinion, but it should show you the absolute maximum speeds your drive is capable of. That being said, the ATTO results showed me the same thing as the other benchmarking tests.........something is WRONG.

For the drive to produce numbers that resemble mine and others that own a Samsung, and then suddenly produce numbers like these is a sign that something has happened. What.....I'm not sure of. If this wasn't the first Samsung drive that I am aware of to act wonky, I might be able to narrow it down to firmware, capacity problems, etc......but I simply don't know of any problems with this drive.

I was just trying to follow any direction from the previous posters.
The Write rates are still terrible.

I'll let you know when I get the new drive and will be doing a CLEAN INSTALL.

Did you OP/over provision the SSD per the Samsung Toolbox?

This is a Snip of mine.
To the right of that is a Snip of the Samsung Toolbox pdf.

I OP'ed my Samsung after installing the OS.
When I did it the amount I OP was listed at 11.9GB which is almost 10%.

It will take a few minutes to complete but not real long.
It has to move some files around to make the unallocated space but it will make the space and then make it unallocated as in my SNIP which is what you want.

RMA'ing it may be the best bet.
Make sure you do over provisioning on the new one at least.
If you alrady did this I missed it in the thread.

I can't remember if I've asked, so I will ask here.........have you updated your motherboard BIOS or updated the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver at any time from when you installed the SSD to when you noticed the speeds were crappy?

Do me a favor........if you have AS SSD installed already, open it up. You don't have to run it, just open it up and make sure the Samsung SSD is selected. Then take a snippet and post it here.....it should look something like this.



Also, for the length of time you have had the SSD and how much data you have on it, I don't believe over provisioning is what caused your problem. I'm not 100% sure, but I have quite a few months on mine, without over provisioning and it still runs the same as the day I got it.

There is no new Samsung SSD firmware.

I only had about 50GB on the SSD and I had back up images if needed.

Follow kbradys suggestion for now with the AS-SSD.

I wasn't trying to interrupt.

I think I misunderstood and ran the test: Looks as bad as the others.

It's almost as if trim or garbage collection, whichever applies here, isn't working properly. I'm still thinking it is an internal SSD problem. Nothing we have done has really had any positive effect on the write performance.

Something you could try, although it seems as if RMA'ing is your best bet, is doing a secure erase and reinstalling windows and running a test on it after you get drivers on it. You don't need any fancy customization, just a clean install, then drivers, then test. If the numbers are still crap, we know it is the drive, if not, it is something else entirely. I understand if you don't want to do this though, just being thorough!

I tried to see if TRIM was on there and was told to open HDtune and look there, but there is no option for that.

Could it be that the backup image I transferred from the hdd is causing all this, even though it was fine at the beginning?

Trim is something enabled in Win 7, but some SSD's have a housekeeping function like Garbage Collection, or something similar, that keeps everything in tip-top shape. It looks like before it writes, it is having to find a suitable place to write to, if that makes any sense. Also, I am NOT an expert on SSD's, I only understand so much from using and reading about them. If I am way off on how they work, I hope someone will correct me.

You should do a Secure Erase from the Samsung Magician software and I believe that will take care of all of that. Backup anything you feel you can't do without first. Then install Windows normally. Like I said, it doesn't have to be fancy, just a test to see if you get crappy numbers after a clean install and drivers are loaded.

Bring up Crystal Disk Mark, select the drive you want to test from the drop down box (your image is showing C: drive currently) I usually test 2 or 3 passes @ 1000MB ( your image is showing 5 passes at 1000MB) and when you have it set the way you want, click the "All" green box and wait for it to get done.

Well, Kerry, I finally was able ( I think) to do the install.

Should I still return the drive?
