Hi All,

I have started getting the "this computer is not running genuine windows" error as well. There seem to be so many flavors of this issue that I feel more comfortable posting my own output for review than following the instructions of one of the many other threads.

This is an Asus desktop computer that I bought in Autumn 2010 from a well-known electronics retailer here in the States. In late 2011, I was having problems, so I took it into a local shop who completely wiped the disk and did a clean install using the key on the side of my case.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Jack in NC

Thank you for the very quick response!

I downloaded and ran iata_enu.exe from the link you posted and received this error message:

This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing this software.

Golden got the error right, but not the solution ;)

This problem looks as if it may be in the registry, since the file doesn't also appear in the File Mismatch area, but we need to check first.

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.
The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

Is it just me or are more and more win 7 machine becoming deactivated in the last few months than normal?

(conspiracy time!)
Ahh, must be because win 8 is coming out, trying to push user to upgrade?

Not a serious question just wondering.

It's been the worst day since yesterday (thanks Flogging Molly) so apt!
It's possibly because of the gravitational effect of 'Solved' threads :)

The numbers in the MS WGA forums actually seem to have dropped - and the ones that do get posted seem to be the knottier ones.

Thanks! I have not gotten the warning since rebooting. But, there were corrupt files reported when running SFC, and still a tampered file warning in MGADiag. Info below...

I was kinda expecting that this would be the case :)

There are NO errors that I can find in the SFC/CBS log - which means that it's almost certainly either a permissions problem, or a registry problem.

Let's check the permissions first...

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and run the following commands....

DIR C:\Windows\slc.* /S
ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\slc.* /T
ICACLS C:\Windows\SysWOW64\slc.* /T
ATTRIB C:\Windows\System32\slc.* /S
ATTRIB C:\Windows\SysWOW64\slc.* /S

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

OK - red herring found :)
It seems that the system had locked the folder previously - possibly it was updating the files at the time - and that was what caused the error message.

Let's try the direct repair approach.

SFC /SCANFILE=C:\Windows\System32\slc.dll
SFC /SCANFILE=C:\Windows\SysWOW64\slc.dll
SFC /SCANFILE=C:\Windows\System32\en-US\slc.dll.mui
SFC /SCANFILE=C:\Windows\SysWOW64\en-US\slc.dll.mui

Note that I can't actually persuade the first two to run properly - so don't worry if they won't run for you (I'll have to try a few things and see if I can get them to work)

post the results - hopefully one will be different to the others

Nope - I can't even do it in Safe Mode with Command Prompt with every possible service disabled. :(
The only other way to do it would be from the Repair Environment.....

......and I just tried that and it failed!

That seems to be normal at least.

So far, the ONLY difference I can see is that a couple of the winsxs files have a rather odd date.
This may mean that they have been substituted by malware, and the malware removed.

We can try and replace them if you like - hopefully it won't cause any problems!

It'll take me a while to work up the procedure and test it (lord knows how!).
In the meantime, please copy the two files below to your desktop, and compress them, then attach the compressed file to a response - I'd like to see what they look like. (you can delete the copies on the desktop afterwards!)
