Immediately after applying a patch or upgrade to a Windows 7 laptop, one of your software start to malfunction causing the machine to reboot every time you try to run or open that software. What could be the most probable reason for this malfunction and what would you do to get your software working normal again?

Before the reboot does Windows 7 show a Blue Screen? Similar to this:

Hard to know exactly why a patch or update causes problems. Perhaps the installation was corrupted by a power glitch, just as one example. Or maybe the patch or update was written in such a way that it's conflicting with how the other software is written (they're not playing nice with each other.)

When I've experienced this kind of conflict I'll uninstall the patch or update. If multiple patches and/or updates were installed at the same time I'll uninstall all of them. I keep several system restore points so I just roll back my computer to a date/time prior to installing the patch(es) or update(s). Then I'll try installing just one at a time, reboot and make sure everything is working before installing the next one. Yes, it's a lot slower but many times installing multiple patches or updates can cause problems.
