Windows 7 Laptop won’t load Windows when powered up

I have a Dell XPS L502X Laptop that won’t load Windows when turned on. I would like to try to use it as a backup if something serious ever happens to my Dell Inspiron 24-5459 Desktop. What can I do to regain access to Windows on it?

Steve

Hi Stevieb2685,

You say it won’t load Windows when it's turned on!

Is a clean install an option?
Have you got the original Windows 7 DVD?
If so, can you boot into Repair my computer?
Around the time that this started happening did you install any new hardware or software?
Were there any software updates or Windows updates that you installed?
Can you boot into Safe Mode?
If so, are there any new entries that have appeared in the startup menu (Start > search box type msconfig > Enter > Startup tab)?

I hope this helps!

Is a clean install an option? I guess it can be if you think I'm able to.

Have you got the original Windows 7 DVD? No. It was preloaded onto the laptop.

Around the time that this started happening did you install any new hardware or software?
Were there any software updates or Windows updates that you installed? Not sure.

Can you boot into Safe Mode? No. When I turn it on, the fan spins and the screen stays black. Then all I can do is press the power button to turn it off. I can do nothing further on the laptop.

Hi Stevieb2685.

Can you boot into Safe Mode? No.

So constantly pressing the F8 key when you turn the computer on doesn't take you into Safe Mode?

I hope this helps!

Power your computer on, and begin tapping the F8 key, to try to get to the Advanced Boot Options menu. If you're able to get there, choose Repair your Computer / System Recovery Options / Dell Factory Tools / Dell Factory Image Restore. This will put your C: drive back to the way it was when the computer was new - all current data will be erased.

If you can't do a factory reset that way, you could either download the recovery media, or order it from Dell. Go here for more information:
http://www.dell.com/support/content...-downloads/dell-backup-solutions/media-backup

Keep in mind that if the computer came with something other than Windows 7, it will restore that other version of Windows, not Windows 7.

Using Recovery OS Tool results in, well, not being able to use it. I have tried both the Service Tag as well as the express Service Code on the bottom of the laptop and get this result: No OS images defined for the product.

Just to be clear, are you saying that you were told that there were no OS images defined for your laptop when you went to the Dell link that I posted?

If so, then I suggest you call Dell and ask them how you can order the Factory Restore disks, or how you can download the Factory Restore image.

Yes. I tried using the Dell OS Recovery Tool and upon trying both the Service Tag as well as the Express Service Code and the program told me
Code:
No OS images defined for the product.

I would say that your disk is bad.
As you have a desktop, remove the laptop disk an attach it to a port on the desktop.
Boot the desktop and test the laptop disk.

You can install Win 7 using any Win 7 disk and the COA key (that in on the label that is under the laptop case or under the battery).
