Solved Windows 7 Home Prem to Windows 7 Pro

Hi,

Today I've been trying to upgrade my Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit laptop to 7 Pro (as I eventually want to upgrade to 8 pro)

Have a legit copy of windows 7 pro from dreamspark and thought it would upgrade no problem, when I booted from usb and after the first few setup options I got this message "To upgrade from one edition of Windows 7 to another edition of Windows 7, use Windows Anytime Upgrade. Cancel the upgrade, open the Start menu, and search for Windows Anytime Upgrade"

When I try this I get to choose between purchasing an upgrade online or entering my upgrade key, I don't have an upgrade key, I have a normal product key that came with my win7pro download, so when I enter this it says it's invalid. What else can I do?

You have a hard copy of Windows 7 Pro...a box kit with the disc and the product key code on the package...is this correct?

If so, then all you have to do is; change the boot order in your BIOS to boot from CD/DVD, then load the disc and restart the computer....then just follow the on screen prompts and then you'll be given a choice to either upgrade or clean install.

I'd call Microsoft and give them the Product Key that you got from Dreamspark. Let MS tell you it's valid and exactly what type of license it is.

It sounds like you have only a downloaded ISO.

If MS says it's a valid Win 7 Pro license and all is well, I'd go to mydigitallife.info and download a new ISO for Win 7 Pro and burn it to a disc.

Then try the install again---completely bypassing whatever you downloaded from Dreamspark.

Maybe because it could be a OEM licence on the laptop, that's why you can only do with "Windows Anytime Upgrade".

If you own the Windows 7 Pro boxed, then i guess the better is to Clean Install this new version of Windows and enter the valid CD key.

Yep it's just the iso and product key i've got, will try contacting microsoft and see what they say. It's just I upgraded old 32 bit laptop 3 times using dreamspark and all went fine, just this one that theres been an issue

Went with a clean install rather than upgrade and had no issue, thanks for everyones help.
