Why is my laptop detecting my battery as a charger?

Hi 7 users, I have a problem for quite some time and I'm starting to get frustrated... Some time ago I bought a battery for my laptop (Asus G51JX) and, it didn't work, I've sent it back and bought a new one with the same specifications (11,1V, 7200 mAh, 9 Cells).

Now, when I start the computer on AC only, it works fine, but when I put the battery, the little icon on the taskbar goes up and down and then stops, If I remove the power cord, the laptop continues on but for my surprise it says "Plugged in, Charging" WITHOUT the power cord!, how is that possible? it is not from the OS because I tried another HDD with a completely different installation and it did the same, now my question is... Is it BIOS or the Motherboard?

I'm really looking forward for your help guys, I'm almost giving up on this and I don't want to

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

JP7even

I'm not sure what you would be giving up on, but it sounds like you used a generic battery, and the laptop is having trouble gathering information from it. You already determined where the cause was by swapping drives and OSes. Seems like you are down to two options. If the battery is a big deal to you, then consider buying a real OEM one. If it's not, then there isn't anything to worry about. I use several laptops, but rarely do I use them on battery, so it wouldn't bother me. If you do, and are concerned about accurate battery life remaining, then purchase an OEM battery.

Besides...before you "give up", what has Asus said about this behavior?

This is an OEM battery, but I am going to keep using it with the charger, besides, I'm going to build a desktop rig in a few months but the laptop would still be very practical for other things.

Asus didn't say anything because my warranty is over...

That's irrelevant. They should still offer an explanation or suggestions of things to try, especially if the battery is new. The battery itself should have a one year warranty, if you bought it from a legitmate source.

Thanks for the help, but I'll keep it like this till I build a new rig, I think this may be a mobo problem but 300$ for a board at this time is just waste, better keep those 300 for the desktop's mobo :)

I agree if it's a temporary system. I meant that Asus should still be able to give you some troubleshooting information, or help you solve the issue. If not, that would make me think twice about buying another one of their products.
