3D games/applications freeze, video hardware error.

Help!!! I can't play any games on my laptop because the game freezes every few minutes and I get this error report whenever it happens. What does this mean?

The laptop in question is an HP Compaq 8710w with:
Core 2 Duo T7300 2.0 GHz
Nvidia Quadro FX 1600M 512MB
8GB DDR2 667MHz RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1

Hmmm...so if my system passes everything on that checklist except the video stress tests, which cause the same freezing and crashing as games, I can assume that I have a defective video card?

Testing with Furmark was actually the very first thing I did, as I am very familiar with using it for testing thermal issues and overclocking stability. I get the exact same problem on Furmark, OCCT, games, anything 3D:

After a few minutes, the application hangs, sometimes with artifacts or a black screen. I have to bring up the Task Manager to unfreeze it, then it's fine for another few minutes before it hangs again. The video hardware error is logged every time it hangs.

Since my error (STOP 0x117) is a video TDR timeout, I tried disabling TDR altogether in the registry, but it doesn't help. I'm guessing video cards shouldn't be timing out unless there's a hardware failure?

It fails for some other reasons, too. But it appears to be a hardware fault in your case.

It would be better if you test it with either onboard graphics or using another card, for being sure.

I would, but too bad it has no integrated graphics and a replacement GPU would cost more than what I paid for the entire laptop!

I guess I'll just consign it to non-gaming purposes.

Not so good, but if the crashes are occurring during the gameplay only, you may stop gaming on this computer.
