Please help my Dad - Desktop Icons and General Settings

Hi all

My Dad has a new laptop and he is having trouble with his desktop icons.

He likes My Computer on the desktop, so I did the right click 'Show on Desktop' routine, but after a reboot it disappeared.

Also, all of his folder icons disappeared from the desktop.

Auto arrange doesn't stay on either.

I have Windows 7 myself and I didn't have any of these issues.

I advised him not to get Norton but the salesman was very persuasive; he has various Norton stuff running all the time (as they do). Could it be this? It probably isn't in my opinion.

Any help would be great.

I want him to start to enjoy his machine.

Hmm, that is indeed a bit strange. But

1. I doubt that Norton has anything to do with it. I use Norton since many years and never had such a problem.

2. Try this - after the 'show on desktop', right click on the icon on the desktop and create a shortcut. Maybe that will stay.

3. If nothing else, arrange the shortcuts in a toolbar. Then they are easily accessible, you can properly arrange them by subject and they will definitely stay around. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/72092-toolbars-how-use-windows-7-vista.html

1) Microsoft Security Essentials
2) Malwarebytes Antimalware

That`s all you need

Right click desktop>personalize>change desktop icons> check what you want> apply>ok

Uncheck allow themes

See if they stick.

Yeah, that's what I always use.

I could be wrong about Norton, but, to me, it always seemed like a security guard that keeps running up to you and telling you what it has stopped coming in.

I like my stuff to run in the background, and Norton always seemed like the obvious choice for the paranoid.

But loads of people love it! What can ya do!?
