BSOD driver power state failuer after unsuccessful shutdown

Hi,

as you can see I'm new here but I decided to join and share my problem in hope of finally finding a solution. I searched the web and this forum about this particular BSOD event but none was like mine and solutions mentioned were very complicated to follow so I decided to open my own thread. I hope I opened it in the right section of the forum.

So as the title says I have BSOD driver power state failure happening daily on my ASUS N53SV laptop. It worked perfectly, without this or any other error for over a year and then it started. What always happens is after some period of working on my laptop I normally go to shut it down (before sleep, etc) and since it happened so many times now I already noticed a pattern. Usually (for the first year of use) when I press shutdown, the laptop shuts down in a matter of seconds, shutdown sequence starts right away. But now, when I press it, for about 5 seconds nothing happens, then the Force close window appear but there are no applications still running. After that it goes to shutting down screen and stays there. Usually I don't force turn off and I just let it be like that so when I come back to use it I find the laptop rebooted and an error window saying: "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown". Once I actually sat in front of my laptop for about an hour and then it finally turned off, rebooted right away and there was the blue screen. After that it boots normally. Now the reason I'm explaining this so thoroughly is because on other similar topics I see people already attaching their minidump files and event logs. Thing is, I'm not that smart when it comes to computers and since the laptop is under warranty I don't think this is my problem to solve. However, the laptop was checked and "fixed" and when I got it it was back on its factory settings. So I went and did some usual things that I do with a new computer such as installing Microsoft SE as AV software and also installing Spybot S&D. Then for about 3 days all I do is install a bunch of Windows updates including Service Pack 1. After that I install the newest drivers for my Intel graphics and wifi and then the newest drivers for my nVidia GeForce GT 540m graphics card. Everything seems to work fine and then it starts. I don't know if it means anything but when the shutdown sequence "hangs" my nVidia graphics card is activated so that might be an indication of problem. My laptop specs are: intel i7 2630qm, 8GB ram, Asustek Comp. Inc. motherboard, Intel HD3000 integrated graphics and nvidia card I mentioned before and Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit version that was already installed on my laptop when I got it.

This is the error message that I "wake up to every morning". If you need me to do anything like attaching some files please instruct me on how to do it as I mentioned I'm really not good at this. Again I'm sorry for posting such a long description of my problem but I figured it's the best thing to do and every little detail might help you guys help me. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to SevenForums

Start by updating the sound card drivers. But first uninstall/remove older ones.

Driver	c:\windows\system32\drivers\rtkvhd64.sys (6.0.1.6257, 2,52 MB (2.647.528 bytes), [COLOR="Blue"]23.2.2011[/COLOR]. 18:15)

Click on the Start rb: ► Control Panel ► Programs ► Uninstall a program ► Uninstall everything related to; Realtek. REBOOT.

Delete remnants of its drivers/older drivers using Driver Fusion/Sweeper REBOOT

Get latest drivers from here OR from Filehippo.com

Scroll down, download and install the 64bit driver version for your laptop.

Reduce the items at start-up. Nothing except antivirus is usually required.

Ok so I uninstalled the realtek hd audio drivers, basically it was the only thing that I was able to find that was related to realtek then I deleted the entry with driver sweeper and finally I downloaded and installed the newest drivers for 64bit windows. I also unchecked many things in startup and services tabs in msconfig that I basically knew I could..some other stuff by Intel and such I didn't change. In the process, first two reboots were unsuccessful and I had to shutdown my laptop by holding the power button. Other two went fine.

I also downloaded the blue screen viewer so here are some things that I think could be useful (if you didn't know that from the minidump files)
Caused by driver: ntoskrnl.exe
Caused by address: ntoskrnl.exe+7efc0
File description: NT Kernel & System

I will post the results after some testing time..probably very soon..the best test will be the shutdown before going to bed this night. Thanks.

edit: I guess this isn't good...everything was fine until I tried to use google+ hangout with my friend. I don't know if it's directly connected with hangout but it happened when I tried to use it. Basically I lost sound completely. No warning, no indication, volume icon on the bottom says that sound is on but there is no sound. It happened before and reboot was the only way to fix it.

You need to enable driver verifier.
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

Let us know the results, with the subsequent crash dumps, if any.

And, can you remember it, is it started crashing after you updated the graphics driver?
This information will be highly helpful here for us.

and save - make sure the file is hosts, not host.txt - there should be no file extension, just a filename of hosts

in the start menu search box, type msconfig
and then enter
select the startup tab
and untick (clear) all checkboxes

I would also suggest replacing Spybot with an alternative: MSE, avast, AVG are all free and provided adequate protection.

ok thanks guys for all these replies..@ARC I will run the driver verifier. It says in the tutorial that there could be many BSODs in the process. Should I stop and report to you after the first one or after 24 hours period? As for the other question, I really can't tell precisely since updating nvidia drivers and intel graphics drivers is one of the first things that I've done. I updated nvidia drivers form version 266.1 or something similar to 306.97. As for Intel drivers I let intel check for new versions automatically and then I downloaded the newer version.

@Slartybart so far I've unchecked more things in startup tab in msconfig. I also downloaded the BIOS version 215 from Asus downloads. Should I try to install it? Asus Liveupdate says there is no need to update the environment. The host part I didn't get very well but I will try to find the files that you mentioned and change them as you said.

ok so I rebooted the system and entered BIOS then followed the instructions I found online and installed BIOS version 215. It all went fine as far as I could tell. I went into BIOS again and its version number was 215. Then I rebooted again and right after Windows logo there was a BSOD after which I was told to chose the startup repair to find and repair any problems. I figured this happened because of the driver verifier but of course I could be wrong. The startup repair said it could not automatically fix problems so I booted into safe mode. I got this message:

Blue screen view said that BSOD was caused by driver dtsoftbus01.sys, which I selected to be verified in driver verfier settings.

I will attach the dmp file for you. I wasn't able to find the sysdata file. Should I disable the driver verfier now and hope that I can start my system normally or keep using the safe mode? What if disabling the driver verifier doesn't fix the problem? Should I use the Windows Recovery?

Got it, uninstall DT. Should I just use the laptop normally and report if the typical unsuccessful shutdown-->BSOD happens or should I run the driver verifier again?

Slartybart I've followed all of your instructions except for the thing with hosts files because I just didn't know what to do. So if you have a moment to explain to a beginner like me, what exactly to do and how, I would be really thankful.

dseeman: hosts is a file used in networking. It "translates" IP octet addressing to URL addressing, much in the way a Domain Name Server (DNS) does. For example: 102.54.94.97 is the octet address for the Host rhino.acme.com


Entries in the host file take precedence over DNS address resolution. Humans use URL addressing, machines use octet addressing.And thus end the first lesson on TCP/IP.

It might be less confusing to work backwards (I won't use tech shorthand this time either )

Create a new file in notepad
paste the following into the file you just created

Save the file to your downloads folder
Select all *.* in the file type box
Type hosts in the filename box
Do not give it an extension
and click save
Check the title bar - is the file named hosts (no extension) or hosts.txt
If it was save correctly, close notepad.

In Windows explorer:
navigate to C:\Windows\Dirvers\etc
Rename hosts to hosts-ds0

copy the hosts file you created in downloads to C:\Windows\Dirvers\etc
You can use drag and drop if you have both explorer widows open,
other wise return to downloads, copy the hosts file, return to C:\Windows\Dirvers\etc and paste the new hosts file.

You might have to chage the folder view to see some of the folders / files.
