anyone know why I am loosing my USB ports. I restarted, before that I tried to do the "safely remove hardware" command, but It kept telling me LaCie was in use. But I didn't have anything open, Not as far as I could tell.
so I got tired of it and just shut the power.
Made the "doorbell sound"
went to restart, I had no mouse. Tried restart again, still no mouse, wireless or wired.
So l un pluged my keyboard (it was still working) and went to device manager,
and of course had about 4 or 5 flags beside the USB lines.
remover them/check for new hardware, they reinstalled, all is working now.
But do you think just shutting off the LaCie is what caused the USB ports loss?
This thing is driving me nuts, I'm ready to throw it out the window, and go back to XP.

I set the properties for the external to faster performance, disable the Quick Removal of USB Devices/enable Write Caching, So I have to use "safely remove hardware".
But it kept giving me the "it was being used" error, try latter.
I finally got it to tell me it was safe to remove, and shut it off, but every time I restart , it knocks out several of my USB ports.
I am beginning to wonder if this ext. HD is just not compatible with my system.

Thanks,
Tony

Any Ideas?
This thing is pissing me off.
I installed AMD chip set drivers, no help. this page.
Original AMD Chipset Driver | HP® Support

Ran this MS fix this page, no help.
Tips for solving problems with USB devices

Un checked "allow this device to shut down to save power" in USB root hub, No help, They even seemed to re check them self after shutdown/restart.
Guess I'll have to uninstall/reinstall USB drivers every time I re start.

Hi Tony,
I have had exactly the issue you have and it was caused by a defraging program locking the USB drive. I suggest you boot up and shut down your computer without the external drive plugged in to verify the USB mouse and keyboard are working OK.
This program may help you out by stopping the drive before you unplug it. Safely Remove Hardware better alternative

The other thing you could try is to shut down and reboot the PC when unplugging the hard drive. That usually takes care of misbehaving USB drives.

Yes, I did remove (Un-Plug) the external HD before restarting the system, and it still knocks out the USB ports.
As far as shutting down the external, I think the last few times, it was OK, but the external LaCie has a shut down or sleep mode, so I only need to shut it off when I power down the computer.
So it looks like the computer is now locking or messing up the USB ports on restart all by it self.
The External may have started all this, I don't know.

I have read something about deleting upper and lower USB filters from the registry, but am a little leery, as I thought I read else where this was not a good Idea.

everything is working fine once I remove and let windows reinstall the drivers for the affected USB ports.
But I hate to have to do it all the time. It does not knock out my wireless mouse, so that in what I use to get the USB drivers back.
It knocks out my keyboard and my wired mouse, and the one my camera cord is plugged into, and maybe the external hard drive USB port also.

It was funny too, when I 1st got this ext. HD, I could not get windows to see it, turned out I had to plug into either the front two USB ports, or the 2 rear ones, Bottom 2 only, Top 2 rear would not work, although my mouse and camera would work on the top rear ones.
I have pretty well been fighting with this thing one way or another, (first the install trouble, now the USB getting knocked out thing) since I installed the ext. HD.
Thanks,
Tony

Does your external hard drive have its own separate power supply? If no, that is the problem, too much power drawn on the 5volts USB supply.
You may have to wait for some USB registry guys to look into this and advise you.

just called HP, I still have warranty Tech support, all he could offer was re install OS.
I never made my Image. So if I do that, will have a lot of programs to re install, and all the updates.
Would still like to find a fix if possible.

Well all seems well. read up on the delete upper and lower USB filters, and decided to try it.
it was this string,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000
The upper filter,refferenced LaCie, ............."UpperFilters"="LaCieUSBFilter"
and there was no lower filter.
I deleted "UpperFilters"="LaCieUSBFilter" restarted, and had all my USB ports working from the get go.
Turned on the ext. hard drive, transferred some files, used the "safely remove hardware" option, was told OK to remove, restarted and all was well again. I went back to regedit, and the "UpperFilters"="LaCieUSBFilter" was not back in there.
Only thing I did notice, I had changed in device manager, I set the policies for the external to faster performance, disable the Quick Removal of USB Devices/enable Write Caching, So I would have to use "safely remove hardware".
But it reverted back to default of "Quick removal". Thought best to leave well enough alone.
like l said , safely remove hardware seems to be working OK now, and the USB's are not being knocked out, so it seems to be OK.
I don't know what the high and low filters are, or more so, why it refereed to the LaCie, or why ""UpperFilters"="LaCieUSBFilter" was put in there before, and it is not now, but just hope things continue to operate smoothly with this system.
Have to do my back up here soon. Just moving a few things to the Lacie so my Image does not have a bunch of data that don't need to be on there. Glad I didn't reformat back to the HP system as it was when I 1st got it.
Thanks,
Tony

Yeah, like I said, there was no Lower filter, just the upper, and it referred to the LaCie, So deleting it seemed to do it, and again, it did not return.
Don't know why it got put in there, or why the ext would not show up using the top rear ports, or what was going on. I don't know a ton about the how and why of computers.
HP should get some techs that know more than just to tell you to re install windows.
Seems to be OK though.
Thanks,
Tony

well this thing is still giving me trouble, not letting me eject the hard drive, in safely remove hardware.
Keeps telling me it is in use, I have every folder shut, what the heck could be using it.?
I was told to eject the external before shutting down. What is causing this?

Yes, Thanks, Actually I did come across that last night, 1st I installed "unlocker" but it did not show up when I right clicked on anything, so I took it out.

Yes, this USB Safely Remove seems to be working, but is this just a limited time trial, or is this a reduced options version.
Seems it says Evaluation version.
Might buy it if it seems OK, but looks like they want you to pay to up grade every year.
Why do things always need up dated if they are working? I can see Anti-Virus programs,
Kind of sucks you have to pay for something when you already paid for an 0perating system.
Read somewhere about disabling file indexing, but would make searches slower.
Thanks,
Tony

Use the free trial to determine if it does what you want. If you buy it you get free fixes and upgrades to the program for 1 year (like most software) after that you don't need to buy it again. I have been using it for a couple of years and I have not upgraded to the latest version as the version I got is working fine and I don't need to spend the money. It is not a subscription.:D
I have no connection with the company, it is a tool I use and it helps me out so I am passing the knowledge along.

Right I understand you not "selling" the product. OK so just the 1 time purchase is enough.
I was ready to write, and say, this USB safely remove is pretty slick, I left a folder open on the drive, and it even closed it also.
I might set it to automatically power down the ext HD also.
Thanks,
Tony
