Files on external drive cannot be accessed (owner + permissions hell!)

My Picassa is jammed up compacting stuff.

I'm reading a few successes before a terminal error that stopped the whole changing of permissions.
Ex:
SUCCESS: The file (or folder): "C:\Users\1 Eric Bentsen\AppData\Local\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\10.0\UserCache.bin" now owned by user "*Computername*\1 Eric Bentsen".

Yeah, that was 11 X \Application Data

autenticated users is wrong!! it shouldn't be special.
put checkmarks on item 2 ...9,11,12 only in left column.

yes!! That's the default.
But are you already owner of all files and dolders as asked before?

My Picassa was one of the last things changed before the DOS permissions change crash, now it doesn't seem to work properly at all anymore. I don't know how to get a screenshot up.

SYSTEM - All checked except Special Permissions
HomeUsers - Only Special Permissions checked
1 Eric Bentsen - All checked except Special Permissions
Administrators - All checked except Special Permissions

That's fine as it is!
press advanced there. Then select "owner" tab there you can change the owner. Make it your name!!
Also put a checkmark there so "underlying objects and containers" will be changed ownership. (translated form dutch, so can be other text) no click ok multiple times.

Now go again to security for C:\Users\1 Eric Bentsen and again advanced. then change permissions. put a checkmark and second option only, so clear the first one if activated. press ok multiple times.

I just had to restore that folder to a previous time so things work again. Luckily that point was yesterday afternoon.
On Win XP I used to be able to create my own restore points too, but that seems to be missing on Win 7. The machine decides when to create a restore point, and I have no idea how much hard disk space Restore takes up these days. I had several entries to choose from just from yesterday, and it threatened to take 2 hours to restore 12.7 GB, luckily it was more like 15 minutes.

OK, I was already the Owner of that folder. I checked the box "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" then Apply, and now it's changing permissions on thousands of files. There have been a handful of "Access Denied" errors so far that had to be skipped past. But I haven't hit a spate of hundreds of files to click past yet. It's still early in the process.

return to security->advanced ->tab owner->change. Make yourself the owner. Be sure to put a checkmark at the bottom. Now click OK a few times

Now you are the owner of all files/folders.


Then open this screen

put a checkmark at "Replace all child object......"" and press ok.

I'm clicking like 3-5 times a second for 20 minutes trying to get past the constant stream of Access Is Denied errors while permissions are being changed. A lot of it is itty-bitty bit parts of .html files. There's no checkbox to tell Win 7 to stop nagging me about that and either change permissions or don't. I can't possibly click this much.

BTW, it seems all the graphics on this webpage don't work anymore. I'm getting .gif placeholders. Must have lost a file association while I was doing this.

I'm ready to cancel out and restore to the previous afternoon because there is no way this is gonna finish.

Looks like I'm gonna have to use Linux to delete some large folders I copied over to My Documents (Win 7) from an XP Acronis backup. (Then redo the permissions thing I just tried)

Probably gonna have to hook up a 500 GB FAT 32 external hard drive to my new laptop, and copy files from my Acronis True Image Home 11 Win XP backup onto that, then copy those files into My Documents (Win 7). Permissions may disappear when files land on FAT 32, then they can copy to Win 7 without permissions baggage. Still have to observe the 4 GB file limit, not sure if that applies to folder size too (PS: folder size doesn't matter). I have a lot of 23 GB folders with hundreds of video files in each.

I'm not doing that again. It quit on a dime and corrupted a program. I had to restore the folder to an earlier time to restore function to the program.

Hi Kaktussoft, apologies for disappearing, but it was close to 3 am when I was going over the instructions! hehe

I've done everything, including post #11, and I've only tried a few files, but ones that gave me trouble before are now working fine! Is there anything else to set do you think? Otherwise it looks like you solved my issue! SUPER AWESOME!

You are owner or E:\ (default is SYSTEM but I dont care). Ownership has been propogated to all stuff below it. So you are owner of everything on E.

We did set permissons on E drive to what is default when you format a volume. We deleted all permissions and inhereted it from root of E:

Google "Takeownership". There is a zip file that allows you to setup a registry change that has the "Takeownership" command on your right click context menu. Can change ownership easily for 1 file or for an entire drive.
