Windows 7 un shares a shared network drive

Hello all

I have two computeres set up in an offline LAN with a 4 port switch connected to a router. One is a server with 4 shared 1TB drives. The other is just a works station.

Both computers are running windows 7 ultimate x64. My problem is that 1 drive which I've label as Z:\ keeps disconnecting in the workstation.

When I check the server I noticed that the Z drive has been marked as un shared. So I re enable sharing and set the desired permission. Then I re map the drive on the workstation.

A few days later and the same issue happens. Both computers are always left on and I've set the power options accordingly.

Any help would be appreciated.

This sounds like Windows Diagnosis. Me and a couple of colleagues had the same problem when going over to Windows 7. Network disks would disappear, typically on Monday morning.

The reason is; in Windows 7 there's a task called Windows Diagnosis, this usually goes at every Sunday. This will clean your computer and in the same time delete network disks that aren't working. The weird thing is, the network disks do work, but for some reason Windows think it's broken and deletes it.

Here's the solution I came up with:

Open Task Scheduler from Control panel or opening Run (Win+R) and type taskschd.msc

Expand the following:
-> Task Scheduler Library
-> -> Microsoft
-> -> ->Windows
-> -> -> -> Diagnosis
When you click on the Diagnosis you will see a scheduled task in the middle column. Right click on this task and Disable it.

Now your network disk should no longer disappear

I have heard of mapped drives disconnecting themselves but in the cases I've seen it was a power saving feature causing the problem.

I'm not sure why the Windows diagnoses would be causing this problem.

Since it's a power saving feature you can turn off the default time out which is set at 15 minutes.

Or at least maybe someone else with the same problem will find this useful.

I didn't think that would work. You should follow the links I posted, they have the answer you are looking for.

Chev65 I set it to 20000 minutes for shutting off the hard drive, which is 13 days. I set it to 2000000 and we'll see what happens. If only there was a way to disable that feature.
