Yeah, but if I have to twist and tweak Windows 8 for getting Windows 7, what's the point in having it. Might as well stay on /7. And how many people are skilled enough to do the tweaking correctly.

I fully agree. In a few weeks their will be baskets full of tweaks for Windows 8 to make it work on a PC. Why would one move to Windows 8 then sort through all the tweaks when you are all ready using Windows 7. What would be the purpose to such a move.

I use windows 7 and im very happy.. its good user experience right out of the box.
I decided to try windows 8 i had pc that i dont do work with and thought maybe that would be good way to learn and maybe give a chance to windows 8.. i bought upgrade version thats very cheap.
Install went with problems got blue sceens (quite fast blue sceen experience i would say ), and because i was installing upgrade (more like donwgrade) version and clean install i was formating windows 7 prior to install.. so had to reinstall (windows 7 intall was without any problems) windows 7 every time windows 8 blue screened and said you have to redo all the installation because it was failure. after tweaking bios and some other changes i managed to get windows 8 running.. and i really tried to like it but first thing i baught was start 8.. and i dont regret it that was 5$ well spent.... and after that i find windows 8 useable.. but the feeling is there why the hell i need 3rd party software to make os UI useable.. there is that feelin of not clean MS ui still hanging.. and the metro apps that are still there comes out from time to time to remind me its not tablet i want multitasking with windows (metro is windows without windows). and default metro apps is crap that i feel was rushed.. for example the mail app its like some kind of joke you cant access any advanced settings like where to store email messages on your computer so you can backup ir or do any thing advanced.. and it takes all screen. Its good maybe for phone to check mail from time to time but not work with important mail. Windows vista had quite good mail application.
im sorry if that is too much windows 8 rant for today but i feel somehow dirty after using windows 8.. why do i need 3rd paty app to use os.. i undesrstand that microsoft wants to push their store because they get money from apps sold that way.. but why make apps there metro only not desktop friendly.. all i want is program running in resizable window with close minimize maximize buttons.

I've already had two OP's two that have had BSODs with Windows 8, one at the moment, seems to be having some issues with avast! and Windows 8; they said their previous Windows 7 installation had no problems.

But that may be a faulty implementation in Avast. When OEM programs cause BSODs, you never know who is at fault.

Another reason to avoid Avast in favor of MSE.

If someone was to upgrade to Win8 - whatever version - and then found that it wasn't suitable, would it be possible to sell the key to someone else? Or could one keep the key and use it when/if Win8 evolves into a better build?

With a retail version you do what you want. It is your commodity.

An OEM version, once installed on a PC, has to stay with that PC.

It looks like you are not alone with Win 8 Avast BSOD issues.

Since getting into computers starting with Window 95a, I've beta tested one version or another of Windows OS up till Windows 7. Windows 8 is the first OS I've not touched. Downloaded the preview version, but never even put it on disc, let alone installed it.

Now I am planning about getting a copy of Pro while it's still at 39 bucks, but I've no idea when I'll install it. Which gets to my next point... If I install it on a virtual machine, which virtual software is best for it?

Virtual Box worked on the beta versions when others wouldn't. If I'm not mistaken, it's working on others now.

Thanks. BTW the only virtual software I've used was Microsoft's Virtual PC. I may give that a try and see if 8 will install on it, if not Virtual Box.

Before you throw $40 at windows 8 try it for free....
Works on VM Ware Player 5 and Workstation 8 and 9. I tried the Betas and the Enterprise version to test drive the OS.

I have been laptop shopping the last two weeks. I was surprised to see how many of them have Win 8 installed already. I found quite a few good deals, but they had Win 8. I just kept looking until I found what I wanted with Win 7. I am sure there are many others that are doing the same thing.

I'll try it out after I pay the 40 bucks for it. I already know I'm going to get it, even if I do try it out. Might as well get it for 40 now than pay 150+ later

Plus I already have the preview version, I just never installed it.

I'm also in a position to get it for free, if I could ever get the site (DreamSpark) to recognize my school credentials.

It's worse for the OP's and anyone who needs to clean install Windows 7 again; installing every update individually since SP1 would drive me to the limit!

I was in Best Buy yesterday. No signs of Windows 7. All the computers had Windows 8 and the shelf only had Windows 8 boxes.
I still should've asked if they had a copy of Windows 7. I'll update 7, yes it's a pain, but when you're done .

Making Windows 7 nicer, sweeter, smother, is not Microsoft's intension's. It might slow down sales of Windows 8. SP-2 for Windows 7 cost Microsoft money. Selling Windows 8 makes Microsoft money.
