Unable to connect to modem/internet via lan but wireless works fine

My desktop (windows 7 ultimate 64bit) has been able to connect fine to the internet until I got home from work this morning. My laptop is connecting to the same modem fine through wireless (along with my wii). The modem I am using is Motorola SB 901. When I rightclick my connection on my desktop and hit troubleshoot problems, I get 'local area connection 2 doesn't have a valid ip configuration'. Same thing happens when I switch the ethernet cord to local area connection 1. When I go to control panel, network and internet, network and sharing, the connection map at the top stops between my pc and the network (which is now labeled as 'unidentified network').

Here is a list of what I have done so far to try and resolve the issue:

1. Replaced the ethernet cord with one I know is working
2. Full scanned my pc for viruses
3. Disabled all firewalls and virus protection programs
4. Restored my pc to a previous save state
5. Reset winsock with cmd via these prompts: netsh winsock reset catalog and netsh int ip reset reset.log hit
6. This attempt is unfinished as I am getting stuck. I am attempting to setup a static ip to attempt to resolve the issue, but when I open cmd and type ipconfig/all, the default gateway under my local area connection is completely blank.

Here is what comes up with ipconfig/all:

7. Powercycled modem pc and every device that connects to my modem via wireless.

Any help towards this issue would be great. Can't seem to find anything useful googling my issues!

Extra info that may be helpful. Anti virus is Microsoft Security Essentials. Going into device manager and checking under network adapters, there are no issues showing for my network adapters.

do you have an extra NIC card laying around you could install? Try that to see if its the NIC you are using. If you do and it gets and IP then its your NIC card. If you don't have an extra NIC or you 100% positive it isn't the NIC do you have a spare router laying around? Try using the spare router, don't connect it to the internet just power it on and plug it into your PC, if it grabs an IP then its your router. Lemme know what ya get.

Try to connect SAME network cable to another pc. So unplug from laptop and simply put in another pc. Works? Now you're sure cable/router etc is working fine

Do you have 2 "Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controllers" in your machine? If so, why two wired network connections??

I would think that simply resetting the Motorola SB 901 would most likely fix this problem.

There should be a reset button on it somewhere for this.

sorry for the late replies i gave up and went to sleep. i switched out the sb 901 modem with one that my isp gave to me when i signed up for their service and now the pc is back online. Now, for some reason, when I try to connect my laptop to the ethernet with a linksys portswitch, i am getting the same issue the pc had on the old modem which is the default gateway is showing blank and its not connecting to the internet.

I haven't used the ethernet port on the laptop in years, is there any chance that the port on it may be screwy and that buying a router with wireless would resolve the issue for the laptop? or should i try to setup a static ip and set the default gateway in there to match my pc

On the laptop, I would go into Device Manger and make sure the Ethernet has an up to date working driver installed and that the connection is enabled.

As for the old modem/router Ethernet going out, that can be fixed by just resetting the unit, should be a small button on it somewhere, or you can usually just unplug them for five minutes which should reset it. The wireless may need to be set up again after that.

I just redownloaded the ethernet driver for the laptop and reset the port switch and modem. the pc is still working fine but i cant pull up a default gateway for the laptop. if it helps, the portswitch is a linksys etherfast 10/100 5-port workgroup switch.

Is iTunes installed on this laptop by any chance?

Does it say Unidentified network anyplace?

Both of those are correct. The laptop does have itunes installed and the laptop is saying unidentified network in network and sharing.

Both of those are correct. The laptop does have itunes installed and the laptop is saying unidentified network in network and sharing.

ITunes also installs the Bonjour service which is famous for causing connection problems on Windows systems. No default gateway, Unidentified network are all classic symptoms of this problem.

You will want to go into Windows services, run box type services.msc, and look for either Bonjour or ID store something followed by a bunch of numbers which is usually at the top of the page. Disable that service and reboot the machine.

If you can't find the service post a screen shot of the services Window and I can find it.
