Can I switch from win 7 Enterprise to Win 7 Pro...?

Hi,
I'm taking a work computer home which has Win 7 enterprise on it.
Once I do that, my understanding is that I can't use it at home.
I want to save all my preferences and data.
I'm a total newb, but I think I remember changing a win XP version by just putting the disc in the DVD drive and following prompts and it kept all my settings and data...

Is this possible in this situation going from enterprise to pro???
Can I do that if I just buy a new product key?
The computer is a Dell Dimension 9200 -is this the right software?

I think you should first check with the IT Department at work to see if is okay to do such a thing. Most work places don't want this done.

As you are using Company software have a word with the Company IT Administrator.

OK ... then why are you taking it home -- if you can't use it at home?

Every work-PC I've used in recent years came with hard disk encryption already on it, and automatic connection to a Domain when I logged in.

To remove these, you would have to wipe the hard drive; I don't think simply reformatting it would be enough. Even then, I don't know that you could get to the drive.

Unless they are "giving" this to you (as some companies do to "retire" old PCs), it might not be worth the trouble trying to convert it for your use.

So I can see that I didn't explain this well.

My understanding is that, in order to control the way it's software licenses are used, MS has this software periodically "check in" to a server. Something about "DNS" and "KMS" I think? Does that sound right? My impression is that the software says "Hey, I'm not being used where I am supposed to be used so you can't use me anymore".

For the record, I am not stealing this computer; it's one of several different types/brands of computers at work and they are getting a package deal for upgrading to the same model/brand. Consequently, I asked -*and was given permission*- to take the computer home.

However, I was warned that I'd need to get a new copy of windows, so that's why I'm asking about this.

Yes, I *could* bug the IT guy at work, but he's already over-worked and is always swamped. I know my work files will be moved to the new computer, but I have tons of music, pictures and other "non-work" stuff that I want to keep and that won't fit on my ancient and decrepit home computer that I currently have.

So, if there's a way for a simpleton like myself to install another copy of windows without losing all my stuff and keeping all the random programs I have (itunes, skype, VLC, -um, a game or two- etc.) I'd be really happy!

I want to reiterate that I am not trying to steal anything; as I indicated in my post, I'm happy to buy and pay for another copy of windows. I just don't know how to"re-do" windows on a computer that already has a copy of windows on it since I have always gotten windows with whatever computer I've bought in the past.

I think your IT dept can maintain a KMS activation off-premises, which is a good reason to ask. Many Enterprise users carry company laptops.

If you need to get your own copy it would be a Clean Install Windows 7 and you'd need licenses for all of the software which might be a good reason to try to keep Enterprise with provision to use it at home.
