I have tried a few versions of Windows 7 from 7100 to the current one and I love it as an OS but I am having lag problems with gaming, single player only. It's not on all games but ones that I play a lot of - Civilization 3, EA Sports Cricket 2007 and one or two others, they all are a couple years old lol and run perfect except for the lag.

I am using all the latest drivers, obviously the video card drivers have had a couple revisions and each has been the same. I have tried compatibility mode & running as administrator etc

Have tried it with no antivirus installed and with, no difference either way

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm having the same exact problem. I was playing Sims (with the internet disconnected) and I would get lag spikes every 10-15 minutes, and it would last up to 3-4 minutes each time. I play online with World of Warcraft and I get the same exact thing. This is a brand new computer...everything is updated..everything was scanned for viruses etc...I clocked the computer back, I defragged.

This has nothing to do w/ the internet connection...router..or w/e internet wise..because I had all the same problems with the computer disconnected from the internet. Thing is though, I only have these lag spikes when I am playing a game...everything else is fine.

I can't think of anything else to do to resolve this problem :(

have you tried Tips on Troubleshooting Game Issues

I know my older DirectX 9 games ran terrible in W7 till I updated the DX9 runtimes that the older games use:

5 - Update your Direct X files - Contrary to popular belief, just because Windows 7 is DX11 capable doesn’t mean it has the latest DX9 files!!! Most game issues can be fixed by simply updating the DX files.

I updated My DirectX , still nothing. I cleaned up my computer...also. I'm still having the same old problems. It just makes no sense to me, this computer is new and I didn't have this problem when I first bought it. 6 months later..I'm having huge lag spikes every 10 minutes that I play a game, it doesnt even have to be an online game.

Sarajane, do you know when these problems started? Something you installed or did may have had this effect on the computer, or perhaps the game itself doesn't run well for whatever reason.

First I am assuming your computer has been swept for malware/viruses

if this problem has just started happening recently (may have loaded corrupted/bad drivers or programs etc.)

check the Event Viewer to see any flagged system events that may give you some idea as to what is causing the problem

you can try restoring your PC back to an earlier time if you have a backup or a system restore point before the problems occured
