How to share drive with specific computer

CCC is an administrator

There are 2 drives on all computers: C with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 installed, and D. All computers are connecting to the same router.

What should I do if I want Computer 1 to access drive D of Computer 2 and Computer 2 to access drive D of computer 1 while Computer 3 and Computer 4 can't access any other drive apart from their own.

I have fully access to all computers' setting.

It's quite simple really, you will need to add each machine name as a standard account on every machine in your network. This will allow the machine names to show up on the NTFS permissions list so that you can set shares for each machine individually.

The first link shows you how to create a Standard User account, although you can also create an Admin account depending on the access you want to give that User.

The second link shows how to add Users to Groups which have predefined access.

It can take awhile for all this to sink as there are many possible variations of User access but once you get the hang of it then it's fairly simple.

Yes, you need to add those accounts to which ever machine you want to use for sharing.

After you add the accounts the names will show up on the share with list.

To tell you the truth i have never shared files without the Account being password protected so i don't even know if it can be done without a password, though i do i know about turning off password protected sharing.

Maybe chev65 can shed some light for me.

Password protected is more of a secondary layer of protection, if it's turned on then someone accessing files on another computer would need to know the password, even with the shares set up to allow access for that particular User name. The problem with password protected sharing is that it tends to remember the sign in credentials unless you set it otherwise.

In order for the individual share access to work you would obviously need to remove the "Share With Homegroup" option completely from the folder and only allow the share for the special Username-PC and the owner's name should be there as well.


For the NTFS permissions you would also need to remove the default "Everyone" share from the C drive as this will override the restrictive permissions for everything in the drive.

You are removing all User permissions from the folder or drive and only adding the individual User names which you added earlier as a standard account "Windows 7" or local account "Windows 8".

Password protected could be used to add another layer of protection.

Those will be the only ones that can gain access because they are the only ones listed on the share.
