Thank you Robert for you quick response. I gather from that Microsoft wants all to look and work the same. Tablets, phones, PC's, Laptops ect. Give a damn what the customer wants. Take it or leave it attitude from Microsoft. I'm in the leave it group like so many others.

You're welcome, Layback Bear, and basically, yeah. They figure they've got the desktop user by the ba**s(theoretically speaking), and so they can do what they want with the operating system, and don't give a damn what the customer wants, like you said. You would think after the flops that were Millennium Edition and Vista, Microsoft would learn to listen to the customer more...but, I guess not.

Actually, I think it's more fitting to say they've got the desktop user by the Ballmers.

Huh - well everyone & everything has a label these days. Used to be we were just users.
Looking at this from a software support angle I see 8 as something of, well future job security. Rounding off some data to date about 70% of callers are on w7. There's a bunch still migrating from XP to 7. Got a few on Vista. None of these (business class - type) "users or companys" are in a hurry to migrate to 8.
Personaly I think metro is a turd without a touch screen.
Maybe I'm just upset my team lost last Sunday.
Maybe I find MS's comercials trying to sell 8 insulting & annoying. Funny how when 8 is up and running irl there's no idiots jumping running dancing around with acrobatic tablet devices.

I am Enthusist as well but I would only prefer this in a Tablet or The way my Phone is now as my Main Os I couldn't tolerate it as much because I am using a different platform for my Device that im barley getting around to and currently my wife is cursing the day that phone she has was bought

I certainly had my bad comments but these were in fact before i actually used this interface as of now im still sticking with 7

But for a Tablet i find it pretty bad ass for the most part because those are just simplified toys when it comes to real task that is where they fail and it's the truth

Yeah... money. However I do agree with you.

Anyway to be honest, we know people will complain about anything so that's nothing new. However when I see PC enthusiasts like me, uninspired by the "new" OS. I think that's saying a lot. As I've said before, 8 is the only OS I've failed to beta test or even have on one Pc on release day. And I've been playing with Windows since Windows 95's release.

That said, I do have a copy I'm running through WMware right now, and will probably purchase a copy at the 39.99 price (my copy I have now is offered through my school). Do I want to pay 179 for a copy no! And this is coming from a person who paid 219 for 7 Ultimate.

Like I said, time will tell where the OS sits or finishes up, but I'm not betting on 8.

But there's a reason why people are complaining - it's because no one can do his job in time, and because of business, products are just released in current state, whatever it is, 90% or 10%, but it's never 100%, so we always have to wait few years to get tons of updates, and even after updates there are enough bad things to complain about. And i will use these products, while i can get them for free and legal, but i will never ever ever buy them, cause i dont agree with the way these products are going.

I'm an Enthusiast but I wouldn't exactly say I have rejected Windows 8. I'd welcome it on a tablet but I'm in no hurry to use it on my desktop or laptop. The big thing that bugs me about Metro other than it being locked into a full screen, is it being restricted to just one monitor. Is it really that hard, in this day and age, to have it so you can run more than one Metro screen at a time? And before anybody mentions it, metro snap is not a usable option for me. I have two 19 inch 4:3 1280x1024 monitors but apparently they are not wide enough for snap to work.

I was seriously considering installing windows 8 but then I found it wouldn't run Popcap's Bejeweled 3.. That was the end for me.. No windows 8.

Well, errr.. actually.. I was never really going to install it... Even though I managed to make it look and feel like Windows 7 for the most part, no Aero glass; Leaving the flat ugly look was enough to keep me away...

It remains one of the few things I haven't downloaded through my technet subscription...

I like many read a lot about Windows 7 and Windows 8 but I need some help here to understand.
1. Was the Start Menu removed to repair some sort of problem with the operating system?
2. What was the problem?
3. Does Microsoft give some sort of reason why the Start Menu is a bad thing.
The only thing I can think of is the Start Menu doesn't have that Toys R Us look.

MS is now into the Toys R Us look/fad, and the rest of us got thrown under the bus for no good reason.
Then they got into finger paints! Remember those when we were little kids?

People seem to have very short memories -- Cast your mind back to the introduction of XP -- people absolutely HATED it at first - but it went on to become the longest running OS in History ever - even including the veritible IBM Mainframe OS - MVS 3.8 (which believe it or not you can run totally via the Hercules emulator even on a small laptop -- power in modern machines would swamp those the old Mainframes !!!) -- you had huge banks of diskdrives (3330's I'believe which only had 13030 bytes per platter !!!). ibm 3330 - Google Search

Vista was only bad because the hardware wasn't up to it when it was released -- if you run it now on a machine it actually isn't too bad - and remember W7 was built basically out of the experiences with Vista.

W7 was probably the only OS that Ms has introduced that got a good reception from the start probably people just wanted rid of the poorly performing VISTA..

W8 though is a different animal entirely --it has to handle things like smart phones and tablets which rely heavily on touch screens and don't need windowed apps or multi - monitors so Ms was in a bit of a hardplace here -- press on with a load of different OS'es or try and make a common interface so a user would have roughly the same experience whether they are using a phone, a tablet or a computer --and in fact the W8 interface isn't a lot different from Android either so anybody using Windows for the FIRST TIME who has also used any sort of smart phone would be quite familiar with the interface.

Obviously a One size fits all won't please everybody -- but I can see the logic of not having to maintain and develop several totally different lines of OS.

W8 has some good features in it, and as I said before you can't relate W8 stats to W7's --for starters hardware needs less upgrading these days than before --even a low end laptop probably has more CPU power in it than the average user (casual home "Mom & Pop" type of thing with some kids probably surfing or "Face-booking" etc) really needs.

Not only that - people are buying different devices like tablets and smart phones instead of full blown PC's so the License issues of W8 are counted up differently - again be careful of stats between W7 and W8.

For serious desktop user -especially with large external monitors the new metro GUI is an abomination - but it's relatively simple to get into the "Classic desktop" and there are a load of FREE 3rd party add-ons which make the W8 desktop identical to W7 -and even bring back the classic menu.

Sometimes I go DAYS without using a computer -- I can do a lot of casual stuff like email, web surfing, travel booking etc all on a smart pghone these days --even replying to these Forums at times from a smart phone. I think most people these days don't need to use their PC's as often as they used to --and for some a tablet is really all they need -- and I can say that unlike a desktop computer using W7 on a tablet is a HORRIBLE experience -- the touch is Iffy and using the classic menu is a real pain whereas on W8 just slide across like a phone and you are into your application.

Where Ms went totally bonkers is in W2012 server -- although you can run it with only a basic GUI or even in command line it is possible to "enable Desktop experience" which then starts up like W8 the full metro screen -- now if anybody has ever in their entire lives ever used a server they will realize how totally idiotic having metro interface on it is.

I do expect W8 (or its successor) to make a few more concessions to desktop power users --we'll have to wait and see -- but it IS usable and for a lot of people quite OK.

So just wait until later when we see more Windows 8 phones (after a lot of initial criticism --the W7 phones were frankly Terrible and you wouldn't even want to be seen with the handsets --definitely hugely uncool).

However the new W8 ones are getting some very good reviews indeed, and wait for the MS SURFACE PRO tablet --to say nothing of machines like the HP envy set of computers where the screen can be removed completely and it acts as a very nice W8 conveniently portable tablet.

You're right about one thing Jimbo, one size does NOT fit all! But MS is arrogantly telling us it does.
But who suggested anything about "Several totally different lines of OS's"?
All they needed was 1 interface for desktops and 1 interface for tinker toys. That's 2, not several. That would've been very simple to do.

Instead, MS even tried to block attempts to recreate the start menu. In other words, they're purposely trying to shove their metro interface down our throats.
Microsoft has nobody to blame but themselves for all the criticism. They asked for it and they got it.
Meanwhile, we got something we didn't want or ask for; a desktop with a truly ugly interface that's optimised for finger painting instead of a mouse.

It's all about money....The dollar, euro, ruble, throw in your currency.....Initally, you may have a tile or two with ads, but as time proceeds, it will be ALL the tiles. Windows 8 is no longer an operating system, it's an advertising medium and make no mistake about it.
I remember, not to long ago, where a very popular tech website, started painting half of their front page RED to try and get your attention to certain ads. I e-mailed the ad agency letting them know there are many websites with the same information and I would no longer be using this particular site. Of course, I threw in some &(#@(^& to show my displeasure. Later, I e-mailed the web master with the same complaint. Fortunately, they took away the "painting class" and I returned to the site.
Look at the Yahoo front page. They wouldn't know a news story if it slapped them in the face, but at times, they still play games by having advertising animated characters moving across your screen.
Obviously, their front page is not about news.....it's about advertising. The almighty BUCK.
So, I have a retail copy of Win 7, and if I need another OS, it's Linux or Apple. I'm finished with the "business as usual" bit. What's unfortunate is Microsoft will never realize, or admit, WHY Windows 8 failed.

Yes. Whatever it takes to get back functionality. I did it when I tried the Consumer Preview in the summer. Without Classic Shell, 8 was simply a massive headache. Still not thrilled with 8, so I deleted it and bought Win 7 Pro 32 bit)

A friend of mine ordered a new Asus desktop, and was genuinely worried that it might be delivered with Windows 8. When he saw it had Windows 7 Home 64 bit, he and I both breathed a huge sigh of relief. If it had 8 he planned on shipping it right back to the Egg that same day. (And yes, I helped him install Classic Shell on it. Exactly what he wanted)

I might ask if my step-brother, wants Classic Shell with his Windows 8, he already has had BSODs within the first week of using the computer; wonder if that was deliberately made by Microsoft or the OEM to gain more revenue from very long and pointless phone calls?

Wanting to know my opinions on Win8, if I had tried it etc. After I told him my thoughts on the matter he (1).... Told me I was the first person he had talked to who didn't like it (!!!), ....said/implied I was too old to understand win8 (!!!!!!),..... told me I was " Oh...... just a desktop guy" ,sure wish he could have seen my spec.'s here!. Nice enough person if a little condescending. When I tried explaining the reasons for my dislike, he showed me how to swipe a tile........... "how easy it is......".

They're probably just part of Microsoft's marketing team, and don't have a good understanding of computers, and why many people do not want to switch over to Windows 8.

Well, maybe that's the big problem - microsoft is trying to mix too many things in one os, and they just cant do perfect os for tablets, phones and desktop computers in time, so they focused more on touchscreen devices - it's like vista and 7, vista is sluggish and slow even on todays computers, and 7 is fast, responsive, and improved overall. Just try to mix every food product from your fridge and try it So, next windows version will show, if microsoft is trying to do a great all in one os, or they are just trying to shut down their bussiness I'm not sure, if sacrificing their desktop/laptop market's monopoly for mobile devices market is worth it. I mean, they should just wait, "mobile" devices are getting biger every year, so after few years mobile phones will just transform into laptops.
