Hi, I have a media player on my home network, which consists of 3 desktop pcs (1 xp home, 1 win 7 home p, and 1 win 8 pro) and 2 nas boxes. Nothing is wireless, all cabled. All pcs can talk to each other and the nas boxes, all have internet access.

Problem is when I try to access pc files with my media player. It can access the nas boxes and the xp pc fine, but when i attempt the win 7 or 8 pcs it asks for a user id/password. The win 8 pc has both, but the media player wont accept them, and the win 7 pc has never had a password. I tried putting a password on the win 7 pc, but the media player rejects the user and pw.

The media player has 2 boxes appear when i attempt to login to the win7 or 8 pcs only. 1 box for user id, and the 2nd for password. Not too concerned about the win 8 pc but access to win7 would be good.

Thanks, and password protected sharing is off, as is homegroup

Hello ripperrita,

I'm not sure what you are saying here, which type of media player? and which direction are you attempting to access from, I'm not clear on this?

Of course the C:Users folder should be shared with the Sharing Tab on the Windows 7 and 8 machines.

Are you having trouble accessing your NAS box's with Windows 7 or 8 or just from this Media Player to the files on the Windows 7 and 8 machines?

The problem you are describing sounds like the one in the link below, easily solvable.

Solved W2K3 Server can access W8 W8 computer cant see W2K server

Thanks for your response

The media player is an Astone, and as per my post I am having difficulty trying to use the astone to access shared folders on the win7 and 8 pcs. The astone can access the xp pc and the 2 nas boxes. it just cant login to the win7 and 8 pcs.

C:users is shared on both win 7 and 8 pcs

All pcs can acces all other pcs, and nas boxes. There is no problems with the normal function of my network, except when i try to access the files on the win7 and 8 pcs with the astone.

If that is the only problem then the Local Security Policy settings in the link I posted may fix that problem for you.

You would need to make those adjustments on both the Win 7 and 8 machines. :)

Theres no such setting on the win 7 HOME pc but what I did find was this forum link which allowed the media player to access the win 7 pc

http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/5584/astonefix.jpg

That leaves the problem now only with win 8 pro. I changed the control panel settings as per your suggestion but the media player still cant login to the win 8 pc

I'm sorry, I Didn't realize you were using Win 7 Home, but I've advised people to use those same registry settings for the Home Premium version in the past. Those registry settings are nearly the same as the Local Policy settings in Windows 8 so it should be working.

The settings I posted in the first link should be working for Windows 8, it's three different settings in case it's not clear. The pictures might help.

Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy

Local Policies - Security Options

Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Set to Send LM & NTLM responses only

Set the Minimum session security for NTLM SSP

Disable Require 128-bit encryption

Reboot all machines after making the adjustment.

Thanks again, sorry to be negative but its already enabled

What I have done yesterday (and not because of this issue) is to install linux mint on a dual boot setup with win 8, and the media player can see and automatically login to linux on this pc???
