Solved BSOD while checking email or googling - ntoskrnl.exe

Hello all.

My computer was getting a lot of BSOD and sometimes it was impossible to inicialize it, so I sent it to a local computer store so they could see what the problem was. The repair guy said it was the OS wasn't working well, so he did a Win 7 re-install.

Now I have the computer at home and I did only install a few programs (thunderbird, openoffice, and a Star Wars game), but I keep getting several BSOD everytime I turn on the computer, apparently always refering to this missing file: ntoskrnl.exe. Basically, I turn on the computer, open Chrome or Thunderbird and a few minutes later I get the BSOD.

I see this is a common problem, I've looked up on this forum to see if any solution was similar to my case but I'm worried I can't solve this by myself.

I am not sure if this is really a missing file problem or maybe conflictuous drivers (I've already enabled driver verifier).

Windows 7 users: Move to SP1 to continue receiving Microsoft support

The end-of-support date for Microsoft’s Windows 7 – without Service Pack 1 installed — is quickly approaching.
Windows 7 RTM (release to manufacturing), with no service pack installed, will no longer be supported as of April 9, 2013, according to a February 14 post on the Microsoft Springboard Series blog. Support for specific Windows releases ends 24 months after the release of a new Service Pack, and Windows 7 SP1 was released in February 2011.
Windows 7 SP1 mainstream (free) support continues until January 13, 2015. Extended (paid) support for Windows 7 SP1 is available until January 14, 2020. (Microsoft continues to provide security updates for free during the Extended support phase of a product.)
The Springboard blog included this chart to explain the differences between Mainstream and Extended support:

As far as we know, Microsoft has no plans to release a second service pack for Windows 7. Many of us Microsoft watchers have asked the company about this but received no comment. Microsoft is believed to be moving to a new model, via which it delivers annual refreshes of Windows, rather than big-bang releases once every three years or so, with service packs delivered in the interim.
The new model will likely change policies for some IT shops that have waited until Microsoft ships SP1 of a new version of Windows before even considering to move to the latest release.
The Office division at Microsoft seems to be on a path of sticking with the Service Pack model for the foreseeable future.

I see you have recently updated your nVidia Video drivers to the latest version,
try rolling back the driver to the previous version and see if issues remain.

Also run memtest. Run for 8 passes and test each stick in a know good slot for an additional 6 passes.
To eliminate RAM as a culprit.

Post back any results/observations, or a new log if you experience any further crashes after updates etc carried out

Hello again! My problem is now fixed, apparently I had two bad memory sticks. I just have one more question before I mark this topic as solved. I want to replace those bad memory sicks. Should I just look for any type of DDR2 sticks or do I need to pay atention to something else? Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask this, but I don't really know how to choose memory sticks.

That great news, glad the issue is resolved.

For your Ram you need:

240 Pin 1.8v DDR2 PC2-5300 Non-ECC Dimm

I use a company called Offtek, who are very reliable and very reasonably priced, find the ram you need here:

Just another quick question and I am done bothering you .

According to CPU-z I am now using two 1GB DDR2 PC-6400. Wouldn't it be better to buy another pair of PC2-6400 or it doesn't matter? Because I read in another thread of this forum that is not recommended to mix up DDR2 PC2-6400 and PC2 5300 (even if the motherboard allows both of them) due to something related with the speeding.

So if I buy, for instance, this kit (or a smilar one) would I be okay and have no compatibility problems with my current rams?
