S3 "insomnia" with RC1?

S3 sleep always worked fine for me with Vista. Finally switched to 7 RC1 (7100) and now after sleeping it will randomly wake up 1-2 minutes later. I've dubbed this "insomnia" (i.e. it won't stay asleep). Any ideas?

you might try the network adapter and uncheck wake on lan

When you get a chance could you fill in your system specs. we need to be able to know what kind of hardware you have to help you.

You don't have to turn off wake-on-LAN (I use WOL all the time, and I'd go crazy if I had to disable it). What you do have to do is make sure that your adapter is set to wake only on a "magic" packet. IIRC, W7RC defaulted to any directed packet, which would cause a lot of spurious wakeups; in RTM, the default was back to magic-only.

Not necessarily. Some people know their way around enough that they can find it. Or they are resourceful enough that they can Google (or Bing ) it. I give people the benefit of the doubt and assume that, when given a hint about how to solve a problem, that they can muster their own resources to see it to the end. If they can't, they can ask for clarification, but I feel it's generally better to not automatically treat people like children who need spoon-feeding.

Wake on magic packet is enabled.
Wake on pattern match is also enabled.

There are a lot of other settings I don't understand.

EDIT: Nevermind, I think... I now see on the power management tab a "only magic packet" option. That looks like it should work.

I'm a little bit amused that there is a real computer term called "magic packet" though. :sarc:

I used to be that way as well untill on day I asked someone to go into event viewer (type that in search) three guesses what he typed in search. after 1000 posts you can pretty much tell who is new, a journeyman, or an expert. Thing is I think at some point I chose to make it as Kid proof as possible. If the OP turns out more experienced I can change gears and gear the reply to their level.

Well, what else would you call it? A magic packet is just a special directed packet that repeats the MAC address a certain number of times (I don't recall the number off the top of my head, but you can look it up), with the express purpose of distinguishing it from other packets so that the computer won't wake up on just any sort of directed traffic. I guess you could call it a "special packet" (but that's too vague). Or a "wakeup packet" (but that's too dull ). Remember, hardcore computer geeks (esp. the Unix crowd) like to have fun. This is why there's a programming language named after Monty Python. Or a shell named Bash (the successor to the Bourne shell, called the Bourne-again shell). Magic packet is an old term, and whoever first coined it probably thought that it sounded zestier than something generic like "wakeup packet".

I had a similar problem in Windows Vista on my work laptop. I used hibernate all of the time and all of a sudden, it would just start waking up for no reason. The problem was it would be in my laptop bag, turn on and run for a few hours and would be unbelievably hot.

I spend close to 20 hours trying every which way to get this problem to stop...and nothing worked. I finally ended up ripping out some things in the registry which completely and totally eliminated Windows' ability to wake itself back up from any level of sleep. It seemed a bit overkill, but was seriously the only thing which worked. I made notes of this at work and will post them tomorrow...but hopefully it won't come to having to do something this drastic.

Yeah, I checked for scheduled tasks. I checked for wake on lan stuff. I changed all of the power settings. Like I said, I literally spent like 20 hours trying to get to the bottom of the situation. The only solution for me was to flat out disable Windows ability to wake itself for any reason. So, no group policy, or scheduled task or anything else will bring that thing out of sleep now. It's practically unconscious.

I (the OP) didn't take any offense (or lack of respect) from anything any of the posters here said to me.
