Solved Need XP laptop to have access to Windows 7 desktop files

Hi,

I need to set up my XP laptop to have access to my Windows 7 desktop files. My Windows 7 laptop does have access to my Windows 7 deskstop. Please advise.

With XP it helps to use the same User name and password as you are using on the Windows 7 machine, this should give you access to shared folders on the Win 7 machine.

You can also use the Public folders on the Win 7 machine to share with older Op systems.

There are tutorials for this type of sharing all over the place.

I cannot make my XP pc see my Windows 7 pcs even though the two windows see each other's files. I tried the site http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windo...dows-7-and-xp/ several times and it does not work even though I am a Microsoft Systems Engineer. I also tried several other sites to no avail, so I think I'm missing something simple.

I'm confused, can't see the Win7 PC's but can see the files?

From the XP machine, can you see the win 7 PC's showing up under Network?


I'm sure they are using the same name for the Workgroup correct? Because the default Workgroup names are different as I'm sure you are aware.

Even with that it's still required that you use the same user name and password on the XP machine as you are using on the Windows 7 machines.

The Public folders are actually made for this by the way.

My XP pc is getting an ip of 192.168.33.1 instead of 192.168.1.140 on my windows 7 pc. The xp pc does access the internet and has netbios over tcp/ip enabled. I think if I resolve the ip issue, then the other issues will be solved.

That certainly won't work as the XP machine is in a different subnet than the Win 7 machine, the Ip's needs to be the same except for the last octet, 192.168.1.x only x should be different.

I can't imagine why it would be like this unless you are maybe using an incorrect static IP for the XP machine.

You may need to go into the IPv4 properties of the XP machine and make sure it's set to use DHCP rather than a static IP. I'm not even sure why someone would set a static IP to be outside the routers subnet.

Going with DHCP for all machines should sort this out.

I figured it out after trying all solutions. XP is too much of a pain to network with Windows 7 pcs . I installed Windows 7 on the pc and it saw all my other Windows 7 pc automatically.

The only reason it didn't work was because you were using a static IP on the XP machine that wasn't even in the same subnet as the Windows 7 machine. But I agree it's a pain and I'd never use XP because the security is horrible.

As I mentioned earlier you need to use the same user name and password or use the public folders in order for file sharing to work with XP.
