Solved Is it possible my PSU is Maxed out

Here is the run down guys and gals

I recently stabilized my oc to 4.8 Ghz I have 2x HD7970's and also 850 w corsair gold PSU

now I was gaming and all of the sudden I just shut down out of nowhere the system was kinda warm but I felt the Psu it felt warmer then usual so I let my rig chill for a bit then it came back on fine

I didn't see any problems with heat when I did this overclock I ran IBT with 5 passes max temp 54c my ceiling is 61c and when I previously played the same game for a while my temps only were at 33c so is it possible my PSU is starting to tap out because of too much stress and if so i am going to replace it asap

Ps my V-core is flexing on different voltages and i have on llc so it should be solid

When you say just shut down, do you mean your game shut down(crashed) or your entire system shut down? If you were previously at 4.7xxGHz and went to 4.8GHz, I'm almost sure that didn't make or break anything. I also don't think the AX850 is being stressed, unless something is physically wrong with it. I would find a program that stresses CPU and GPU.....I think Furmark has such a program, and run it to see if you can reproduce the problem.

I was going to suggest the 1000 watt, but you beat me too it.

But shouldn`t the 850 be sufficient ? I thought today`s cards were supposed to be real energy efficient. Although, don`t your cards use 2 8 pin connectors.

One thing, how old is the PSU? If it is a couple of years old, it could be down to capacitor aging.

That's the thing though i did a few stress test and everything but it completly shut down and the PSU felt hot meaning it had to heat up

This is the first time this has every happened even with a bad overclock it never shut down like that

and if you see the v-core reading they are different across but before they were all solid on the same voltage which has me beliving im stressing it out and my cards are clocked close to max as well

recently finished the whole tomraider at basicly the same speed and never had a single shut down or gpu issue only when i played darksiders 2 it would heat up like crazy

@ Stormy calculations say im about 194 watts with a 4,810Ghz Oc not sure if that is just idle or load

I used that PSU calculator and got 602 Watts MIN and 652 Watts MAX. I still don't think your PSU is being overworked. I would bet on the CPU OC before the PSU.

I got 675 with capacitor aging 20% takes 800 watts

thats odd well if it isn't the psu im going to strees the motherboard and see what happens i just cleaned it out so i am going to clean it again let you guys know what is going on

I turned it off and jumped on the other computer in the house to make this post get back to you

If it was running fine at 4.7xxGHz and you bumped it up to 4.8xxGHz and that is when the problem started, I would say that is the problem. Also, the default settings for IntelBurnTest is 10 passes(or it was for me), you might try that. I've read that is the least amount of passes you should run, and set it on Standard or better. That addresses the stability of the CPU, but not the CPU and GPU's together. I would probably take it back to your last stable OC and see if you still have the problem. That small bump up in frequency isn't the difference between your PSU being enough and not being enough.

That is a good PSU with quality capacitors. I would not think capacitor aging would come into play - it should be able to handle your load. Not to say that there isn't something faulty with your PSU - if it is not being cooled properly it could shut down for over temperature.

This is what I got using all the spec I found in your My specs. 729W allows for 25% overhead of the minimum 679W, as you see it recommends the very PSU you have.
I have one of the PSU testers Alan suggested, they only measure no-load output, not at a load the system puts on it. I'd stay away from any "no-name" PSU, no matter how long the warranty is, Ultra is a Tiger Direct house brand.
The Corsair, Seasonic, Antec, etc have good. clean and stable output.

If you haven't yet, email Corsair for a RMA, if approved you'll sned your bare PSU back and they'll return a brand new one, with another cable set.

Well after opening and cleaning everything looked good untill i took my radiator off and it seems that the screws are stripped which is odd i don't put much stress on it

The temps were fine but i am going to replace it due to the situation of the radiators condition

i will go ahead and look for a new one and see if i can get 10 passes with the same Oc

if it passes i would like to think maybe my waterblock gave out or something also will metion when i was using the AI SUIT it gave me a centegrade error on my GPU when playing darksiders it never did that before

then not to long after that it gave me a socket centergrade warning if it isn't the PSU and the OC could be the board giving issues and the cpu socket wasnt even hot but the GPU with darksidesrs goes to 85 right away

Tommy, here is a snippet of IntelBurnTest as I run it. Sometimes I choose custom and make it use more RAM, but at the least, they recommend 10 passes at the standard level.

@K-Brady I use that exact same Intel Burn test it passed

I am going to re run it again I just finished getting it up and running and I changed the pump to a new pump same one and my temps got a lot better also I changed my fans im going to let it run for about a hour and start doing stability test

I will run Intel burn test in intermediate blocks start off with 2 ,4,6,8,10 in that fashion i'll let you know if it fails in between those test thanks again for your help

I put one screen shot of my core temp im going to run cinebench and see how much my cpu heats up

I bought 2 of these as well Bundled for 30 bucks for 2 cheaper that way and lot of static air flow

I went to run Cinebench and I was left frozen ?????

I dropped it back to my original speed but really it froze I'm starting to think either this chip is tripping or my board might be acting funny I ran cinebench on 4.7 it ran through but didn't look like it went through smooth like it normally does kinda choppy now

Ran 6 passes with IBT still strong will continue with 8 and 10 in a bit if they run then it isn't the OC I would say after 6 passes i'm solid but the test moves on
