I think it is best to leave E: as it is, it has 50GB and with the backup of C: already on it, there still is 45GB of free space, so not only two, but four, five backups will find place there.

Anyway, I have formatted the USb stick, so now the only thing that remains is to put the 32-bit version on it and try if it works.

So backup image is only 5GB. I know it's compressed... so maybe 10GB real data in it. Pagefile and hibernation file and some other useless files (only needed and created if running win7) aren't backupped.

It will be larger in case you install applications and put data on C. But a normal (especially for work) pc has about 50GB used space. But macrium compresses it... so indeed 50GB is enough.

You can also mount the image and copy individual files from the image in case of trouble. v5: How to browse an Image or 'File and Folder' Backup in Windows Explorer (Browse, File and Folder, v5)

Oh, sorry, have missed it, many things to do...I´ve just downloaded it and will work with it, so it will take a while, will come back later.

Something went wrong with the download, so I´ll try once more, don´t remove it yet.

No, the first download got stuck in the middle and did not move, the second attempt went without problems, now it is on the USB stick and my netbook boots o. k. with it, after a while I get the Macrimum interface and there is an option "Restore image" so I guess everything is o. k. and I can restore the saved image in case the OS should go down. Of course I´m well aware that if the HD "goes down" there´s nothing more to be done, but to replace the HD. I realize the risks for a HD crash are larger in case of portable machines, since I got my first PC back in 1991, no HD crash on a desktop, but three on laptops. I guess the task is done now and problem solved with my netbook, the other problem (my desktop will not boot the original OS from the USB, the real starter of this thread) will have to wait for a while.

So all works. Do you see the internal disk and can locate the image? If so...all is fine. Copy the image to external disk as well.... just for the case the main internal harddisk becomes faulty.

If you replace the harddisk and have the image on external harddisk (use usb2.0 port if usb3 is not working!):

  1. Boot from the usb stick with macrium winpe on it.
  2. Restore the image to the new disk.
Of course make the new disk totally clean first

Code:
diskpart
list disk
select disk 0 (or 1 or 2 see output of previous command)
clean
exit

Of course select the correct drive if you do it!
Above commands can be done from "command prompt". "command prompt" is also available on winnre macrium. Somewhere bottom-left of screen as far as I can remember.

Also check if these settings are still what you want http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/330-system-protection-turn-off.html

That's all you have to do!! Up and running in maybe 30 minutes. Of course you have to recreate D later (it is not in backup yet). And recreate E.

I have now created an image of C: on an external media as well, so I assume I´m fully prtotected, even if (God forbid!) the internal HDD crashes. Kaktussoft, thanks a lot for your patient tutoring and advices! The only thing you have to do now is to teach me how to send a couple of bottles of red Merlod as an e-mail attachment, so that I don ´t owe you any more:)

I´ll also attempt a similar procedure for my 64-bit WIN7 desktop, if I do not manage to solve the problem with the USB stick that has an original factory version of the OS, but is not bootable, I´ll just download WIN 7 Proi ISO from Digital River and activate it, then I´ll create a recovery partition - the procedure should be the same, with the difference that the WinPE/Macrimum would be 64-bit?

On 64 bits machines you can use 32bits code as well!! Use same stick... you don't need to modify anything to the stick! Forget the bottle of wine.... went drunk last night... pfff feel like a zombie already.
