Greetings: Re: Inspiron 546 by Dell. Windows 7 O/S upgraded from Vista. My domputer was operation very well until I purchased a long needed new keyboard which is of the multi-media type. I was getting acquainted with the key when I hit the key with the half-moon symbol on it and that's when all my trouble started. I cannot get passed the Window resume loader on my screen. My keyboard is dead as well as the mouse. I have read suggestions to clear the CMOS ann I udnerstand that that can be done by removing the battery, which I did. I tried re-install discs, both Vista and Windows 7 to no avail Further suggestions include trying a PS2 keyboard which I have, but I do not have a PS2 connection on the computer. I do have an PS2 to USB adapter and that doesn't do anything either. I am s-t-u-c-k !!

The thing about the BIOS is, most BIOS today have pins on the motherboard with jumpers to clean the CMOS. The Battery is mostly for the RTC (Real Time Clock) But they are still some motherboards out there that still use the battery. Just thought i would add this in, incase it didnt clear :)

Is the half moon key used to put the computer in sleep mode?
I don't know, I didn't get any manual or anything with the board. all I know is that when I hit that key is when my problem started and is continuing.

I didn't think about that. Is there another battery somewhere? If I knew what the pins and jumpers looked like on my board. I might be able to clear the CMOS.

the Computer is a Dell Inspiron 546 and the only thing I see on the board is what looks like a reversed R with a U with a smaller US then numbers DRS780M02. One other thing. I have the unit open with the power on and I noticed a period flashing coming from the Ethernet port. I know the Ethernet light is usually green an that is "on". Just curious if that flashing is normal.

Just thinking the cmos wouldn't cause this problem. Since you havent made any changes to it have you? Can you try this? You need the windows 7 disk. Click the link >>> http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/681-startup-repair.html
No, no changes. Only thing is the new keyboard and mouse (that doesn't work either) I have tried several disks and nothing works. Only thing I get is "hit any key, etc. and the I get that black background white letters; Windows Resume Reload.

If the BIOS won't respond to boot the Win7 DVD or System Repair Disk to run Startup Repair then Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS using a method that you can access. The disk is provided in the last paragraph below.

Then Startup Repair should automate all the needed fixes but if not run System restore from the System Recovery Options.

If this fails to recover from an apparent failed Sleep or Hibernate state then try the other steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start.

I'd also test the hardware just to be sure since it's built in on Dell by running Dell Diagnostics Utility - How to Run the

At some point you may decide to skip to the steps for rescuiing your files to run Dell Windows 7 PC Restore or get the superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 using the disk provided in Step 1. You can delete all partitions during reinstall except the OEM Diagnostics if it will run from boot.

There is no question that I would like to do everything you suggest but as I have said previously, I cannot get any reaction from my computer other than; Window Resume Loader. Keyboard doesn't work, mouse doesn't work. Cannot download or run an disks.

Did you even read Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS ?

Power down your PC, unplug and drain power by holding the power button, then as I already told you choose one of the steps to manually reset the CMOS in the tutorial. This may resolve the keyboard issue.

None of the steps I gave you depend upon booting into Win7 which is when any Resume error would appear. You just have to be quick enough with good timing to trigger F12 at the first BIOS screen before the OS is even called upon, to trigger Dell Diagnostics and then the Win7 DVD. If your keyboard won't be recognized by tapping f12 use another.

Once you do this reboot into the Win7 DVD which is provided in the Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start. tutorial to run Startup Repair a few times and then if necessary System Restore from the Recovery options.

Do you have any other standard keyboards that you could try with the computer ? Sometimes you can get them at thrift stores for $5.
