Boot up error 0xc00000e9 after formatting a usb drive (disk drive)

I recently had to reset my laptop to factory defaults, before I begun the process I created the recovery disk, only i used a USB drive instead of CD's. This option reformatted the USB drive into a removable DISK DRIVE. After the reset I formatted the USB drive through the properties and reset it to default (which wiped the USB clean of all files). It still was a Disk drive so I gave up on that front, removed the USB and closed the laptop lid and left.
Upon turning on my laptop it froze on the sign in screen so I did a hard reset which then stopped during boot up and displayed this message:

status: 0cx00000e9
info: An unexpected I/O error has occurred

I am running Windows 7 home. I believe the problem is that since i manually removed the USB drive it Un-linked the drive, then i closed the laptop which puts it into sleep/hibernate/standby mode then when i re-opened the laptop it could not find the USB disk drive.

I have tried booting up with the USB inserted and not inserted but still no luck. Also i should mention that I can not access safe mode by pressing F8. pressing F2 for the boot manager only gives me one option which is windows.

Hello and welcome betodc mate what is the machine make and model? Because usually to do a factory default you only need to power up and at the same time tapping the default key which is different for different brands, For example for Toshiba it is 0'


That takes it into a recovery partition - I personally have never used a disk or drive when defaulting.

My model is a lenovo T520
To be clear the factory reset worked fine and I was able to use the computer. only when i went to re-format the USB is when I began to have problems.

I have gotten some answers to this problem saying to tap F8 until I get the Advanced Boot Option Menu, but as stated, I can not access anything by pressing F8.

Odd mate because that is the safe mode key and is a standard feature of the OS. Now did you try power on and tapping the F8 key around the speed that you would insert a letter twice into a word for an example or just hold it down? .

Because you need to tap it rhythmically it should the give you a screen with a grey coloured line go across the bottom and a message saying Windows is loading files. It is doing just that but only the absolute minimum number to get the machine going. The you should end up with a screen like in the pic.

You then use the arrows to pick what option you want and Enter. It will load into a low res screen but at least it will be up and running

I am assuming you know this but if i don't say it you won't and if I do you will - "Murphy's law" LOL!!

Yes I have tried pressing F8 since the moment i press the power button to the moment I get the error screen. what happens is i get the grey colored line to appear for moment then it goes to a black screen for a good while (mind you i pressed F8 throughout all this). After this I get the "windows is loading files" with the progress bar, which then stops about halfway and prompts me with the error message.

I have been getting some help from other forums and it seems I may have to change setting in my BIOS to change the boot order to make the hard drive first in line since it seems the USB (port?) is what is giving me the error message.

I can get into the BIOS menu by pressing F1 but then i am lost in what menu and setting I must change to make the hard drive boot up first.

If it helps my laptop has 3 USB ports, two on the side (I used one of those for the usb) and one on the back (used for mouse)

I have found out what is causing problems during boot

The main partition of my drive has been converted from NTFS to RAW format.

I ran CHKDSK D: /F to fix the problems but it has now been running for 2 days with only 2% done so far (450,000 files )

Is there a faster or easier way to change from RAW to NTFS?

Recovery of files is not as important now since i will end up re-installing windows 7 anyway

I have used software from this site for cloning and stuff like that so unless some one in th e forum knows how to do that via Windows it is worth a shot How to convert/change RAW file system to NTFS without data loss?

This is assuming that there was nothing in the partition to begin with. If you are planning on reinstalling then I would suggest you first wipe the drive yuo can use a few ways to do that DISKPART and clean all or the Partition Wizard - wipe the drive are just two that I have used but you will need another machine running Windows that you can hook the drive up to.

The last suggestion is the bootable Partition Wizard Partition Wizard Bootable CD allows user to manage partition directly with partition manager bootable CD. download is in the site and you need to set the optical as boot No1

Any of th e clean / erase the drive will take time depending on the size.

When done I always do this but it is up to you.

Instead of just randomly trying things why don't you ask us first so we can help you get a perfect reinstall of the licensed OS which came with your Lenovo? This is the top site on the web for getting a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which is a vastly superior install to. Factory Recovery.

Download the Win7 ISO for the licensed version from Step1 and burn to DVD or write to bootable flash stick with tool in Step 2.

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. Set the DVD drive first to boot, HD second. Then set SATA controller to AHCI. Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into Win7 installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10 to open a Command Box, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=102400 (for 100gb partition, adjust as desired)
FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
ACTIVE
EXIT
EXIT

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. You will get and keep a perfect install to the exact extent which you stick with the tools and methods given.

After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt.You are creating the partition here for the purpose of marking it Active which overcomes certain install failures.

Then try creating the partition during booted Win7 install using the confirmed ISO written to stick or burned to CD using the tool given.

You can create your partition in Steps 7/8 shown in Clean Install Windows 7.

If this fails report back the error message and run the HD maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan.

Were you able to clean the disk successfully?

Are you sure you don't have a UEFI BIOS requiring special steps to install to UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 7 with - Windows 7 Forums or Bypass UEFI to Install WIn7

I have been using the Win7 install disc to access CMD.exe

I have set BIOS boot order to DVD first then HD second, set SATA controller to AHCI

I have been able to clean the disk successfully

I have also done these steps:

ACTIVE
FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"

At this point it either begins the process and freezes at 0%

I am thinking, now if I am able to install windows 7 onto an external drive (USB) and use that to boot up my laptop then go through disk management to create and convert the partitions? would that work?

I asked you if you have a UEFI BIOS. If so you need to install in UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 7 with - Windows 7 Forums or you need to use the steps given earlier to fully Bypass UEFI which are to enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module (CSM). Do you have either of those settings in BIOS Setup?

If not then boot the Win7 installer and try creating and formatting your partition in Steps 7/8 of Clean Install Windows 7

So after trying to convert RAW to NTFS using CMD.exe through DISKPART and getting errors it would screw up my partition table.

After cleaning the HD I used GParted to check my partition table

Since cleaning my HD there is no written partition I created one for windows install using GParted and converted to NTFS which seems to be successful.

After this I inserted the windows 7 install cd

entered into CMD.exe

Went into DISKPART to check if the partition were written correctly:

Everything looks ok so I begin the clean install. and choose my partition to install on:

this process then begins. It copies windows files and begins to expand the windows files at which point it stops after a certain % and displays this error message:

Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart installation
Error code: 0x8007045D

I have also tried creating a new partition through the drive options (advanced):

Why are you trying to install to 9.9gb partitions?

Delete all of those partitions and click Next.

If that fails run the HD maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan.

I have been trying 9.9gb partition in order to just install windows on its own minimal sized partition.

I deleted all of the partitions created and tried installing on the unallocated space and i received this error:

Windows could not format a partition on disk 0
The error occurred while preparing the partition selected for installation. error code: 0x80070057

I have an internal momentus Seagate 500gb HD so i ran the manufactures HD diagnostic and it did not detect a HD or SATA controller


I have also burned a new WIN7 install DVD in case that was the problem but I still get the same error messages

Is there another way to check the HDs status? apart from connecting it to another computer.

The test to determine this with certainty is Seagate Seatools Bootable DOS Long CD test.

It will tell you the HD's condition.

OK I believe i finally just crapped out my internal hard drive because it doesnt read at all anymore

so im planning on switching internal drives from a

Seagate momentus 500gb 7200rpm

to a

Toshiba MK1637GSX: 2.5" HDD 160GB

to see if it works im just wondering if this "new" drive will work with my laptop ( lenovo thinkpad T520 4239 )

I posted that the HD diagnostics does not detect a hard drive which then leaves me with no program options but to exit out.
