Hi helpers,

It's a very strange situation I am stuck on since yesterday.

When I turned on my laptop yesterday, that windows did not load properly and came up with Blue Screen of death with this 'Unmountable Boot Volume' error.

After tons of research online, I found so many different tricks to get it working but no luck so far.

I can't boot my laptop at all, I get to the Windows Recovery Page which gives me 2 options:

1. Launch Startup Repair (Recommended) >> This doesn't work, comes up with the windows 7 background with a cursor and stays there for ever, no dialogue box or anything.
2. Start Windows Normally. >> This keeps me putting into the blue screen of death loop.

So, I then inserted the Win 7 DVD to boot windows from there and perform Start-Up Repair. >> That's doesn't seems to be working either.

I have also performed the chkdsk, chkdsk /r, chkdsk /f /r, but NO luck at all. Tried bootrec /fixboot, bootrec /fixmbr. But that did not helped either.

I am not sure what has caused this problem, but it is just doing my nut in now. I got 2 partitions on my HDD, 1 with Operating System with some data under my user profile and 1 partition with all my data.

I am wondering if there's anyway I can get round of this situation and get it fixed, if not then If I did a clean install then WILL I LOSE BOTH THE PARTITIONS or the one with just the operating system on it? Plus, if it's just the operating system partition which will be lost, then anyway to get my personal data out from there?

Guys, your help will be really appreciated.

Thanks very much!

Cheers!

Hi Kaktussoft,

There are 5 partitions in total when I do list volume.

Code:
C Recovery NTFS 4GB
E RAW 187GB >> TO ME THIS WAS THE OPERATING SYSTEM ONE. BUT HOW COME IT IS RAW? NOT SURE.
D STUFF NTFS 96GB

I would also like to mention, that earlier on I have been doing the chkdsk only on C drive, but just now I did it on E. And, it seems to be taking ages and going through a massive amount of files AND FIXING THEM AS WELL.

CHKDSK /F /R E:
Code:

LOOKS LIKE I HAVE BEEN SCANNING THE WRONG DISK PARTITION SINCE YESTERDAY THEN, NO WONDER WHY IT WASNY WORKING. MY BAD.

Cheers

Did it list a lot of corrupt files in step 1 to 4? Step 5 is for checking space not used by files (free space).
important system files?

Check C and D as well please. You told me you have 5 partitions.... but you only showed 3! What other 2 partitions do you have (on that disk [not interested in DVD])

Seagate disk or western digital?

No, not really, not seen any corrupted files in first 3 stages.

It got stuck there at 16% on stage 4 for about an hour and so. But then I thought lest reboot and see if it works.

Strangely that did the trick, my laptop booted windows from the hdd and went past the welcome screen, logged in by my username. And I got to the desktop. Which was really very strange.

But, now even though my laptop is working, it's not how it used to be 2 days ago. It's very very very slow. It's so slow that it is taking 15 mins to log in to windows and 15 mins to shut it down.

I dunno, why is it doing that. Looked into the Processes, got about 10-15 svchost.exe with the highest memory usuage of 200k, the one after is 100k, the one after is 80k, the one after that is 50k.

So, without running anything, no personal programs or google chrome. I have about 66 processes running in the background and god knows why my laptop is behaving like a pentium 1 processor after having a Core i5 in it.

I seems to be loosing my patience here. Also, when I first got in, I scheduled a Disk Checkup after the reboot and like what happened before. It passed first 3 stages and got stuck on 4th at exactly 16% for another half an hour before I shut it down myself. Dunno why.

Regarding to the partitions, 1 was dvd and the other was some RAW type only for 100mb partition. never seen that before also that's hidden.

Cheers!

100MB partition has most likely label "SYSTEM RESERVED". Normally it boots from there (it has the bootmanager and bootmenu). In your case that partition isn't used at all (most likely). it boots from the partition labeld "RECOVERY".

Do you have an external disk with lost of free space? Make a backup asap! 100MB partition is not that important. RECOVERY partition is for "Restore to factory" settings. So also not that important if you have a good backup. (in your cae it has bootmenu and bootmanager as well) I advise you to make a backup using macrium reflect free http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/73828-imaging-free-macrium.html

Is your internal harddisk western digital or seagate?

And as I said, it's working really really slow, I dunno how can I even start with the Back-up?

It's all explanine here Imaging with free Macrium
Use the winpe version (rescue ISO). Burn that ISO, boot from burned DVD. Once again... make backup asap! Eventually backup WIN7 partition and STUFF partition seperately. I hope it's possible to backup. Let it eventually run overnight for may hours....unless it crahes with an error.

For western digital drive diagnotics: WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD VelociRaptor
But better done in DOS (from usb stick): WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD VelociRaptor
Make bootable DOS usb stick: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/46707-ms-dos-bootable-flash-drive-create.html

I can understand what your trying to tell me mate, but the problem is, the laptop isn't functioning at all. It's very very slow, and that's why I am not being able to use it. Once the laptop is in working condition then I will be able to back up and everything, but the matter of fact is, it's not functioning properly, I mean, I tried uninstalling 4-5 different Programs which were the largest size in the Programs list, 1 was 8 gb, other was 7 gb and it took 3 hours to do that because it was keep crashing in between.

So, we need to now first look why is it behaving like that, if you know what I mean? I can't use that laptop.

So download Here is the link to my Skydrive site. burn that ISO to DVD. Boot from that DVD and backup. It shouldn't crash them because you're not booting from harddisk. You can make the DVD on any (good working) machine. Try to image STUFF partition and WIN7 partition. If problems in 1 partition... only try the other one. Post results.

If really not working... try to save important files/folders only

Hiya Kaktussoft

The link you gave me above for the HDD Test wasn't appropriate for mine, but eventually, I somehow got the right one, It's been running for almost 11 hours now, I have a 320GB HDD and I put it on Extended Test, so once that get finish, I'll have a look in the "View Test Results" and see if it makes any sense to me.

But could you tell me what exactly am looking for in that option, or do you wan't me to just post the results here??

Cheers

quick test was successful ... no errors?
extended test is half way, or...? Make screenshot/camshot of "test results" and post. Or copy/paste if possible. It looks similar to this

I never did the quick test, I just got on with the Extended Straight Away.

Now, suddenly after running for almost 12 hours, I get a ERROR saying " TOO MANY BAD SECTORS DETECTED".

And now it's showing u as "TEST STOPPED WITH ERRORS".

I have attached the Screenshot, for you to have a look.

What do you think I should now?

Cheers!

Not a lot of details...pff. I think both partitions are corrupted. Do quick test as well and post results.

Now install macrium reflect free. Does it install succesfully? if so run it. Do "other tasks"->tab advanced-> put checkmark at "ignore bad sctors". Press OK

Take the 'Other tasks' > 'Edit defaults' > 'Advanced' option and select 'Ignore bad sectors', click 'OK'.

There u go!

I will be now running for work mate, please feel free to take your time and then suggest me the best possible option I can use.

The only thing I have in mind is, since I can now get into Windows, I might just borrow someone's External HDD, get all my data out and format this laptop with a Windows 8 (I have a DVD for 8). But the only worry is....

If my HDD is not working, would it be functioning ok after I have Windows 8 installed in it? Common sense says it should be ok because, I am deleting everything from the HDD and making it a complete blank and then writing win 8 on it, but just wanted to make sure, if that's right or not?

Or else, you think of anything?

Cheers buddy, appreciate your help!
