IE10 Up, FF Returns To Second Place

Hi there
On mobile devices it's a very different case -- most people (including me) just tend to use whatever browser is on the phone --in fact I don't even KNOW what it is !! I just use the "Internet App" or the "Google app" - end of. It might be chrome or something else --haven't a clue and couldn't give a rats toss --it just WORKS.

On a PC the user has a load of choices and often exercises these too -- but IMO as far as smart phones are concerned the number of people who actually download and install a specific browser are hugely in the minority so the stats on browser usage on mobile devices (at least on PHONES) should be taken with a HUGE dose of salt if these are used to determine the POPULARITY of the browser with users.

As far as tablets are concerned -- I have no idea on whether people choose to install different browsers - I'd guess a lot would just use whatever is installed on the tablet when they bought it.

In any case the whole Browser usage thing is largely irrelevant for small mobile devices -- people like Google etc essentially want to incorporate some type of advertising as people surf the net -- on small screens the traditional method of advertising doesn't work -- the screen real estate is far too small and if anything remotely pops up the user just gets rid of it PDQ. On a PC screen the advertisers are much more smart -- even if you don't deliberately READ the commercials when browsing the web sites are constructed in such a way that the messages are usually "Subliminally read" even if you try consciously to avoid reading them.

Interesting read this one -- Mind you you *might* get a 5 sec commercial before it starts.

Incredible read on Subliminal Advertising -- no wonder SevenOfNine in Star Trek could say .."You Will Comply.. You will be absorbed .. Resistance is Futile..... ".

The file that you showed in you post did change for me and I hope that it changed for everyone that applied that update.

Thanks for checking that on your PC. :)

I assume that you are using the standard Windows logon screen theme?

I wonder what security issue(s) could be related to the logon theme?

Actually, I checked the laptop that my employer provides. I don't own a computer :-)

More importantly, I checked virtual machines.

I installed this update...
Update to improve messaging of dialog boxes when you run executable files in Windows
...to an OS where pretty much everything is default. I first applied it to a VM that has all of the updates thru April 2013... and it updated that file. I then applied it to what I call a "fresh SP1 build". That build has IE8 and almost no updates. Again, the file was updated.

Read the info in the link that I provided above and you will see this:

This update changes several dialog boxes that are presented when you try to run executable files. The update changes text in dialog boxes to let you make more informed decisions on what files you should run or should not run.

I guess they are attempting to fix the biggest venerability: the user!

It sounds like the UAC dialogue may be contained in that dll.

Once again, thanks for looking into this. :)

Yep, the effect is pretty much the same - but I was not too happy with the DELL laptop today - so I wanted to disown it; hence my posting that. The Intel video drivers will not always update all of the desktop when I close a window. The screen resolution is not what I asked for, there is not enough RAM for my VMs and the SSD is full - other than that, it is great. NOT!

The DLL is definitely a part of the UAC:

But to get back on the thread's topic:
Why should we care who has the larger "market share"?

It doesn't matter about market share at all, most people will base how good a browser is based upon how fast it loads webpages.

I use Firefox because of the versatility of the add-ons and UI, it can be tweaked in a way to exactly match how you want your browser to behave. I know Chrome seems to be faster at loading webpages but it's also less versatile, chrome is my 2nd browser followed by opera and finally IE 10 which is used as a last resort if I cant read webpages on the others.

Whether it will be back ported into W7 I don't know
Unlikely. Microsoft usually have 3 Internet Explorer updates per OS e.g. Vista: IE 7, IE 8, IE 9. 7: IE 8, IE 9, IE 10.
