Hi there
On mobile devices it's a very different case -- most people (including me) just tend to use whatever browser is on the phone --in fact I don't even KNOW what it is !! I just use the "Internet App" or the "Google app" - end of. It might be chrome or something else --haven't a clue and couldn't give a rats toss --it just WORKS.
On a PC the user has a load of choices and often exercises these too -- but IMO as far as smart phones are concerned the number of people who actually download and install a specific browser are hugely in the minority so the stats on browser usage on mobile devices (at least on PHONES) should be taken with a HUGE dose of salt if these are used to determine the POPULARITY of the browser with users.
As far as tablets are concerned -- I have no idea on whether people choose to install different browsers - I'd guess a lot would just use whatever is installed on the tablet when they bought it.
In any case the whole Browser usage thing is largely irrelevant for small mobile devices -- people like Google etc essentially want to incorporate some type of advertising as people surf the net -- on small screens the traditional method of advertising doesn't work -- the screen real estate is far too small and if anything remotely pops up the user just gets rid of it PDQ. On a PC screen the advertisers are much more smart -- even if you don't deliberately READ the commercials when browsing the web sites are constructed in such a way that the messages are usually "Subliminally read" even if you try consciously to avoid reading them.
Interesting read this one -- Mind you you *might* get a 5 sec commercial before it starts.
Incredible read on Subliminal Advertising -- no wonder SevenOfNine in Star Trek could say .."You Will Comply.. You will be absorbed .. Resistance is Futile..... ".
