The good news is that they're both from the same update (KB2482017)! But the bad news is this is for IE8, so I'm going to have to roll back my VM all the way down to IE8, download and install the updates then export the registry. Bear with me!

Load the hive, drop that in and you should be good to go! Unless it kicks up a few more problems in the process.

It's a nightmare juggling hives sometimes. I was sourcing some keys earlier from a hive then when I came to unload them all at the end, HKLM\COMPONENTS just would not unload. I got access denied errors no matter what I tried... until I realised it was my actual hive and Windows Update was using it Not my finest moment!

Ownership issue? That's what I think. The same bad Windows Update download that screwed up my component store rewrote my ownerships, I think. (I am the only user and, it being Home edition, I have only my own User account which does have Admin privileges.)

I did run sfc at an elevated prompt.

My CBS.log is 1.5 MB uncompressed. Do you want that, or shall I archive it and let another sfc-attempt generate a new fresh (smaller) one?

Hi Dave,

Your CBS log indicated that there was registry problems with one of the keys in your components hives so I had a look at it. In your VersionedIndex subkey one of the keys had an embedded null in it which is why SFC failed. There was also several bitflips present as you can see in the image below, those < characters shouldn't be there.



And sorry to save the worst news until last, but your registry is pretty much destroyed. It has lost most of it's structure and replaced it with complete garbage. You should have thousands of keys beginning with amd64_ but as you can see, this isn't the case! It's beyond repairable now


Something has gone very, very wrong with your computer hardware so I would urge you to backup all of your data as soon as possible before we continue to troubleshoot this. Whatever the outcome of the testing tools we will use shortly, a clean install is the only way you're going to fix this I'm afraid.


Firstly I want you to test your RAM with memtest:

He has factory preinstalled Win7 which is corrupt to begin with and which no tech enthusiast would run. I've advised him to get a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which I hope he is considering while he rearranges the deck chairs on the Titanic.
