System Upgrade after about 3 years

I have just ordered the parts for my first system upgrade in about 3 years.

Should be getting the parts in in about 1st week June and have the system back up by mid-June.

CPU: Intel Core i7 Gen3 3770K
Mobo: ASrock Z77 Extreme6/TB4
RAM: G.Skill RipjawsZ DDR3 16 GB (4 X 4 GB) PC RAM (F3-12800CL9Q-16GBZL)
PSU: Corsair CMPSU-850TXV2UK 850 Watts PSU
CPU Cooler: CM Hyper 212 EVO with 2 CM XtraFlo 120mm fans
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB ST2000DM001
I plan to retain the GPU (Zotac 470GTX), since I am not a real hardcore gamer. Besides, I just upgraded to it about 6 months ago.

The HAF-X case is being retained, since it is just perfect for me.

I will keep you all posted on the upgrade.

Very nice build you have going and a great upgrade. Consider that unless you are looking to place a ton of games on the SSD a complement of OS and normal Office software and some choice others will neatly fit on a 64gb SSD which is down right cheap and here I'm seeing 120-128gb SSD's being offered regularly for just under $100 usd. I don't wan't to be a flash pusher but if you're going to this extreme to upgrade I would strongly consider the extra monies well spent ! Either way you are on your way to an amazing build and we expect to see pictures from tear down to re-build....spare us no details ! Good luck.

hey pillainp, how much are they charging for SSD in your state?

I would replace the i7-3770K with the i5-3570K JUST so I could afford an SSD............yes, they are that important.

To be totally frank, an SSD had occurred to me when I was planning the upgrade, but it somehow slipped my mind (mostly because I did not give it high enough priority) while I was ordering the components. So I decided to leave it till later.

Besides, I really would like to get through this without having to reinstall Windows if I can, and I really do not have the time right now for a complete reinstall of everything I have running on this machine.

An SSD is therefore a definite buy in a few months when I do the OS reinstall.

The 2TB is purely for storage (I do quite a bit of photography - mostly family ocassions - with my EOS 60D).

Ordering everything off Flipkart. I do not even know if anyone here in Trivandrum even knows what an SSD is or if they have them in stock. Gave up on all the local dealers a long time ago. I find FK is now much easier to deal with than these people.

I agree with you that buying the hardware is much easier now online. I reside in New Delhi and here Nehru Place is the hub for all the PC hardware.

Amazon has a sale on the Samsung, the 120 is under $100. Samsung appears to be the number one ssd now, subject to change. Amazon has a no question 30 day return policy, only place I buy for most items, hard to beat their prices. Make sure that Amazon is the actual vender and not a third party. A third party well have a different return policy.

Another question:

If I did get the SSD, and my current install survived the trauma of the motherboard/CPU transplant, would I be able to migrate it from my current HDD to the SSD?

If so, how would I go about doing that?

If it was me I would clean install as one of the nicest features of the SSD is is rips though the install in much less time. If your current spinner has more data then the capacity of the SSD then you won't be able to image the entire drive and bring that over.
