Hi everyone,

I am having issues with my sound(built in) and has been trying to fix this for over 6 months now.
Here are the details of the problem:

No sound after installing Windows 7 32 bit Ultimate or probably after installing the NVIDIA 9400 GT Video Card
still using VGA as my monitor only supports VGA.
BIOS:

Shows Azalia in Southbridge Audio Controller
Below that it shows HD Audio ( If set to this -- error in windows is "no device is plugged in")
If I change HD Audio to AC 97 (Windows will be able to detect my headset but no sound output)

Windows Environment:

AC'97 (bios setting)

Under playback the green bar is showing activity as I play an audio file, yet no audio output.
I checked Device Manager and driver installed is Realtek HD Audio (Supplied by Windows 7 same as the 9400GT drivers which was automatically supplied by Windows 7 upon installation.

Steps Taken:

1.) Try to uninstall the VC to isolate problem still no sound
2.) Uninstall and reinstall Audio Driver no sound
3.) Updated drivers ( Windows has the most updated driver)
4.) Manual update still no progress
5.) Tried install AC'97 Realtek ( test build so to install the drivers ) still shows HD Audio
6.) Used Driver Max to update drivers still nothing.
7.) I have magic jack (USB) and when I play a game while someone is using the phone, there is sound output on the handset.
8.) Updated Nvidia drivers still no sound
9.) CHeck headset and it works with my laptop
10.)Tried connecting to back panel still no sound

I was planning to buy a USB headset or a jack-USB converter but it's expensive and the jack-USB is nowhere to be found.

PLEASE advise if you have any suggestion... thanks!

Karl

Hello and welcome Karl mate as a general rule I like to download drivers from the manufacturers in preference to Windows information.

I would try the audio and chipset drivers from here if you haven't done them already.

Sorry, but this is a wild guess ... I don't use MagicJack, but my guess is that if you had to "install" it, it redirected the audio output to "itself" and thus, now, you don't get audio through the previous outputs.

I'm only saying this because I've seen other thread where folks installed new USB devices and suddenly, their audio didn't work like it did before.

You could try uninstalling MagicJack -- just to see if that changes anything.

I just uninstalled Magic Jack and rebooted my computer. The issue still persist, I am guessing HDMI driver is messing with my audio? however, in device manager there is no hdmi audio driver under audio and sounds.

Hum well I have never really seen a driver for HDMI as such I would have thought the outputs would have been included in the chipset or audio drivers but as your board has no HDMI output it has to be with your GPU as it has the HDMI output maybe you need to redo the drivers for it?

The BIOS setting for "HD Audio" or "AC 97" is for matching your case front panel audio jacks to the motherboard header. The cable that connects to the case front panel audio jacks will have a plug labeled HD Audio or AC97, it may also have two plugs, one of each. Only one can be connected and the BIOS setting has to match what plug is connected. Also make sure you don't have the plug reversed. To the best of my knowledge this BIOS setting has no effect on the back panel audio jacks.
One thing to check is to go to Sound in control panel and make sure the correct device is selected under the Playback tab.

OK, I have a couple of questions just to clarify things.
What are you using to listen to the sound and where is it plugged in?
Is the BIOS setting for HD Audio/AC97 set to match the case plug that's connected to that header?
In Control Panel > Sound, what is set as the default playback device? If you are using speakers or a headset you do not want it set to HDMI.

I'm thinking the HDMI driver is part of the Video Driver.

Agreed Alpha it is http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-9400-gt/specifications so maybe the card is bung! I do notice too that there is no security on this machine and I would a suggest at least a sweep with these would not go amiss.

What are you using to listen to the sound and where is it plugged in? headset, front panel also tried back panel
Is the BIOS setting for HD Audio/AC97 set to match the case plug that's connected to that header? i don't know what's the right settings but I tried switching settings, but fails to hear any sound.
In Control Panel > Sound, what is set as the default playback device? If you are using speakers or a headset you do not want it set to HDMI. its realtek hd audio.

I purchased a USB sound card (adapter) which converts my phone jack to USB, windows installed a generic USB sound card adapter still the same issue the sound meter is going up and down but I still hear no sound.

Tested the headset with my iPhone, its not busted cause I hear music.

for now its generic USB Audio Device, since I'm using the USB adapter. Still no sound, output only the green indicator going up and down while I play audio file or go to youtube.

If I plugged directly to the ports, this system message comes up "The peripheral does not appear to be plugged in. Check the connection. Proceed to next step to finish." note* that my current BIOS setting is HD Audio.

If I restart the PC and change BIOS settings to AC'97, the computer will be able detect the audio device but no sound output, only the green indicator having sound activity but none that I can hear.

Can I suggest an Asus Xonar D series sound card and just use normal jacks? the DG card is really inexpensive and has very good mixing and effects functions.

Like I said before, the BIOS setting has to match the plug on the front panel jacks cable. It sounds like it should be set to AC97 as it detects when in that setting. Double check to make sure your sound isn't set to "muted". The speaker icon in the task monitor down next to the clock should indicate this by a red circle with a red bar though it.

My guess, and it is only a guess, is that Magic Jack screwed something up even though you uninstalled it. If it was me I'd reinstall. The only other option that comes to mind is system restore.

As much as I want to reinstall, I don't have the option. I hate to patch 3 of my online games (2-3 years patch). Dreadful :(
