Random freezes, no error shown on screen

Hi all,

I was having a problem with coloured crash screens a few weeks ago. I thought the problem was fixed but now my system keeps freezing and i have to hard reboot it. I've installed a new graphics card but that didnt help. It happens randomly. I ran malwarebytes and it didnt find anything.

Hi thatstoobad.

Uninstall Magic Disc.

Install the latest WHQL only.

  • Uninstall All nvidia items in Control Panel > Programs and features
    • 3D Vision Control Driver
    • 3D Vision Driver
    • Graphics Driver
    • HD Audio Driver
    • PhysX
    • nvidia Update
(Are you using nvidia chipset drivers? If so, dont uninstall anything other than those are listed).
  • Now follow Drivers - Clean Left over Files after Uninstalling
  • Boot normally now. Go to Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers, Download 320.18 WHQL. While installing, Select Custom (Advanced) install. In the next page, follow this settings:

Uninstall Microsoft Security essentials. Download a fresh copy and install it.

Scan the system for possible virus infection with the following programs.

Let us know the results.

Thanks for the reply. It turns out it was my graphics card. It must have somehow messed with the drivers even after i took it out. Clean install of the drivers for my onboard graphics and it's running fine now. :)

Dont edit the original post. If anything is to supply, do it in the subsequent post. It abolishes the chance to compare.

This time, it is a stop 0x124, which is typically a hardware error. But which part of hardware is failing there is not determined. So it is to test hardware thoroughly.

Test your RAM modules for possible errors.
How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

Stress test the Graphics Card using Furmark.
Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark

Stress test the CPU.
Hardware - Stress Test With Prime95

Do some Disc checks for both the HDDs.

  1. Re-seat the sata and power.
    72974453_zps85c47d93.jpg
  2. Run chkdsk /f/r, following the option two of the tutorial Disk Check
  3. Seatool for dos: SeaTools | Seagate download
Burn it in a blank cd. boot from the CD, click on "Accept", wait for it to finish detecting the drives, then in the upper left corner select "Basic Tests", then select "Long Test" and let it run.
  4. Post screenshots of both the HDDs using CrystalDiskInfo - Software - Crystal Dew World

Are you overclocking? As you are getting BSODs, you should stop overclocking and run all the hardware components like CPU, GPU and RAM to their default settings. Also set the BIOS to default, too.
How To Clear CMOS (Reset BIOS)

Check if the Power Supply Unit (PSU) supplying adequate power to the computer or not.
eXtreme Power Supply Calculator
At least 30% extra is safe.

Is the computer hot? Report us the heat of the computer after a couple of hours of your normal usage. Upload a screenshot of the summery tab of Speccy.

From the BIOS date, it appears that the computer is old; and so it needs cleaning. Dismantle the computer and clean the inside carefully. Clean the air vents and the fan grills, specially. While Re-seating, apply thermal paste to the CPU.

Also, the BIOS is old.
Code:
BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 0608, 4/03/2009
I would suggest you to update the BIOS to Version 130, dated 2011.06.20 from M4N78 PRO - Motherboards - ASUS. Be aware that BIOS update is risky. If you are not sure what to do and how to do, take the help of somebody who can do it.

Let us know when all are done.

If you are not sure what to do and how to do, take the help of somebody nearabout who can do it; or take help of a technician. Hardware are critical thing to deal with.

Hi,

I've installed a new motherboard, new RAM, reformatted my hard drives and fresh installed Windows 7.
Same problem still happening. So i changed my mouse and so far so good...
could a faulty mouse/and or driver crash a system?

If a mouse is controlled by any third party driver, then it can.

PFN_LIST_CORRUPT (4e)
[COLOR=Red]Typically caused by drivers passing bad memory descriptor lists[/COLOR] (ie: calling

available get the stack trace.
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000000099, A PTE or PFN is corrupt

Arg3: 0000000000000002, current page state
Arg4: 000000000005f19e, 0
I would suggest you to enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers.
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

   Information
Why Driver Verifier:
It puts a stress on the drivers, ans so it makes the unstable drivers crash. Hopefully the driver that crashes is recorded in the memory dump.

How Can we know that DV is enabled:
It will make the system bit of slow, laggy.

   Warning
Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

If there is no points, make a System Restore Point manually before enabling DV.

   Tip

Let us know the results, with the subsequent crash dumps, if any.

Ok, I tried everything i could think of. The last thing was to swap my mouse and keyboard. I did that and disabled the drivers that windows kept automatically installing and haven't had a problem since!

So i'm gonna go ahead and mark this as solved. Faulty/conflicting drivers = very upset computer.

Thanks for your help, Arc!
