what is necessary to share an external USB drive in a home group? I have taken the steps to share the external drive and can see the drive from other pc's in the home group, but if I try to access the share it is unsuccessful.

would it be easier to share a drive through a workgroup rather than a home group?

From experience, I would strongly suggest sharing through workgroup since it offers better compatibility.

Could you please follow the steps outlined in this post on the drive that you wish to share and report if that works?

HDD Sharing

Hope This Helps,
Josh

The security tab settings may be different for the USB drive compared to the link that Shadow posted, just do the best you can with them.

The other option would be to add the drive folder that you want to share to a Library then share that Library with the Homegroup. The link below shows you how to do this. :)
