Power supply went out

Given what happened, this is the usual "bad luck of the techsupport guy".
I have seen PCs running 24/7 on weird brand PSUs and they had no issues for what? 4 years and still counting.

Telling the PC to sleep if inactive is generally a good idea anyway.

I recieved the rma approval and label to ship it back. Im going to contact them first to make sure I gave them the right lot number. I have a question. Do they want the origin box? The email they sent said nothing other than it was approved and a label to ship. I dont have the original box and planned to keep the extra cables.. is that okay?

The box does not matter as long as it is packed well. They will probably want the cables back but the RMA instructions should have stated that. If not then check with Corsair.

When I sent my PSU back it was stated do not return the cables, only the PSU. That info was, I think, on the RMA creation page. Any box should be fine, only Newegg would want everything. I think they try to sell defective returns as "refurbished" at times.

I looked your PSU up and I saw some pretty poor ratings. One review even said it lasted only less than 3 hours. That's just a darn shame! I know people have very negative viewpoints from my PSU brand, but I have a 850W Thermaltake, I've never once had a problem with Thermaltake. Satisfied every time.

I read good reviews for corsair. Think I just got the badone from the lot. I still think corsairs are good.

Newegg has some bad reviews. CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX550M 550W ATX12V v2.31 / EPS12V v2.92 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Semi Modular High Performance Power Supply - Newegg.com everything has some bad ones though. Sometimes by reading you can see the user is in a noobular world.

I bet they will send you a TX650M Since the 550M is discontinued.

The modern PSU has many failsafe devices to protect the peripherals.
(not like the old days when every thing went up in smoke)
There are only about 3 OEM suppliers that label up for others.
Move down on this link and expand the list.

Reviews from real reviewers are the best, "reviews" in the comment section of newegg/Amazon/whatever are written by normal people that on average lack the expertise and testing equipment to say anything about a product. The lack of competent reviews is generally a bad thing for a product.

And any brand does not make always perfect devices. It's normal and helps keep the prices affordable (increasing reliability from 90% to 99% or beyond would triple the price, if not more). That's what warranties and RMA are for.

It's when the amount of failures out of the box goes beyond the 30% or when the label gives completely unreasonable wattage and the PSU reliably dies at half than that, when you know it's crap.

I am finally going to mail it back to corsair tomorrow, work was busy this week and by the time I get off everything is closed. Will post an update when I hear back from them. Still have my fingers crossed, hoping for my troubles I get the upgrade since my model is discontinued.

I called them, I will get the same model back but that is okay, it's a good psu I think. It will be here Monday per UPS tracking.
