Vmworkstation rel 6.5.3 - NAT now works

Hi all
The latest version of Vmware workstation 6.5.3 build 18504 on Windows 7 (I'm using x-64 RTM) now works fine.

NAT not working on W7 was a known problem on builds earlier than this.

Whilst I usually use "Bridged" mode NAT is useful if you are operating in an area where IP addresses are restricted such as Wifi in a university residence / school etc).

Download the latest version from the vmware site.

Cheers

I'm actually having trouble to get VMware to work under Win7. I'm using Win7 Pro. x64, not RC but the final version from MSDN. I can't get either 6.5.1 or 6.5.3 to work. Installation was successful, and I can run VMware. But when I try to open either an existing machine or a new one, nothing happens. Don't know what the problem is. Any suggestion?

There is really not much to post. Once the program starts, I get the regular Home tab with "New VM, New Team and Open Existing VM". Once I chose to open an existing VM, nothing happens. No new tab for VM or anything. If I chose to build a new VM, after the regular steps, even I choose to power on the machines after building, nothing happens. Still the same Home tab. That's all I have. Everything worked flawlessly in Vista x64. Weird.

Hi there
I'm using EXACTLY the same build of W7 x-64 as you -- downloaded from MSDN.

Did you do a NEW install (of Windows 7) or an upgrade.

If you did an upgrade UNINSTALL vmware workstation and TOTALLY re-install it.

It should prompt you to re-boot your system and ask for a Licence key>

Ensure that your license hasn't expired - especially if you are installing a "Trial version" of vmware. If it has download a new copy and install on a BRAND NEW copy of Windows 7 ( I.E clean install - not update) which doesn't have any entries in the registry for previous vmware installs.

The first time you open an existing VM it might prompt you with some message like did you move or copy this vm -- just tick the "I copied it box".

Also ensure your Guest VM has sufficient RAM to run -- if your HOST has only 2GB RAM then don't give the guest more than 1GB otherwise not only will the guest VM take ages to start (if it does at all) your HOST system may also lock up due to lack of resources.

Vmware workstation is normally VERY robust -- I'm totally at a loss to understand why it doesn't appear to work on your system.

So long as your GUEST VM is a 32 bit OS you don't even need to have the INTEL / AMD Virtual stuff (forgotten exactly what it's called) set in the BIOS either. For running a 64 bit guest then you WILL need to enable the feature.

Whats the point of upgrading and paying when you havesomething great free?

But please post screen shots after you login, when you try to run that machine, etc. Since you have msdn get expressions 3 and use the screen capture program its great for stuff like this. :)

For what it's worth, I have used VMWare Server (1.0.7 is there now) on XP/64 for several years and as you say, it works really well.

Just today, I downloaded a copy of Server 2 and have just installed it on my Windows 7 PC to see how it compares with the more 'native' Virtual PC that Microsoft 'prefer' us to use. for now it is all the same price (i.e. free) and I have an XP license and a copy of Linux to test out. I guess it's all down to stability and performance (i.e. speed?).

UPDATE: Installed VM Server fine and after I re-read the manual I have it installing Ubuntu 8.04 right now. Very pretty bird as the wallpaper too. At least now I will be able to give my wife some support from this new Windows 7 machine as her Netbook runs this version of Linux. Wednesday will see me trying to migrate my old 32bit XP install over to it! Such fun!!

:sarc:

VMWare Server

I'm new to these forums.. My first post!! Looking forward to all the Win7 insights!

I am also running VMWare Server 2.. after upgrading from version 1.0, it was nice to see the web based frontend. I use ESX 3.5 and the Infrastructure client at work, so Server 2.0 had a nice familiar feel to it ;)

Current setup at home:
Win7 RC1 64bit 12GB (host)
Win7 Ultimate 64bit RTM 2GB (guest 1)
Win Server 2003 R2 Std x86 1GB (guest 2)
Ubuntu 9.04 1GB (guest 3)

All running beautifully!!!

That is why I joined. We can do with some help in the transition, no matter how many years of this kind of thing you have!!!

Right.

Not that much re-learning to do from ESX at all!

I've got to agree. The guest VM finished installed from the CD, and is now installing updates (all 209 of them) happily, all by itself.

I've been using VMware Workstation 6.0.0 build 45731 on XP, Vista and now Win7 without issues. Networking and all other functions work fine on my Ubuntu, RedHat and XP VMs.
Just wish they would implement HPFS functionality like VPC, then I can run my OS/2 VM as well. :geek:

Make sure all the components installed correctly, try this...
If you go into Computer Management -> Device Manager and select More Actions -> View -> Show Hidden Devices a new list of 'hardware' appears called "Non Plug-n-Play Drivers". Make sure that you do not have any "Exclamation marks" and that all are working properly.

I have also completely uninstalled VMWare, all remnants including folders and then reinstalled and had it work.
