Service Pack 2 (KB2687455) will not install

Hi,

Yesterday SP2 became available however I am unable to install it. A window pops up asking for a file called ProPlusrWW.msi in the folder:

C:\MSOCache\All Users\{91140000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C

The file is not there however I found it on the Office Professional Plus DVD. Still, after pointing the pop up window to the DVD location Windows update still reports the update as failed.

The update also fails if I try to copy the ProPlusrWW.msi file to the default location the pop up window asks for.

I’ve tried a Windows update repair program that found two problems. Even though they were reported as fixed it did not solve the problem.

Any ideas?

try downloading the Stand alone version and applying it manually rather than via Windows update.

I found the standalone installer. It too did not find the ProPlusrWW.msi file. After pointing the installer to the DVD with the file the installer quits with the message:

Installation failed

Are you fully updated before the fact ?

I wouldn`t fret over it just yet, nothing too worry about, especially with space on a ssd.

Yes. All updates were installed prior to starting on SP2.

What do you mean "don't fret over it just yet"? Should I just ignore that the update won't install?

And I do not understand what free space on my SSD has to do with it?

The problem reported by the OP has been discussed at length on another forum (Microsoft Office 2010 Service Pack 2 (SP2) - Microsoft Help | DSLReports Forums). The consensus seemed to be that those who managed to install SP2 without any problems had all retained their MSOCache after installing MS Office and those that couldn't install it had all deleted theirs.

A couple of posters reinstalled Office 2010, simply in order to recreate the MSOCache, and they managed to complete the installation. Others sourced the required .msi file (a different .msi file seems to be required depending on the OS and the version of Office being used) from somewhere and copied it into an empty MSOCache and somehow made it work. I tried that and it didn't work for me.

An internet search will turn up several threads which discuss the advisability of retaining the MSOCache after installing MS Office. The general view is that it isn't worth wasting half a GB of disk space on files that will never be needed again. After all the main benefit of retaining the MSOCache that MS has identified is that updates will install without the need to insert the original installation disk to copy any required files. Unfortunately, the inference that you can reasonably draw from MS's statement, that if you delete the MSOCache, you will always be able to use the installation disk option, doesn't seem to apply in the case of Office 2010 SP2.

It may be that the MSOCache theory is a red herring and that there is another reason why a number of people are getting the same error message referring to a missing file in the MSOCache. It would be good to know if anybody on this forum has managed to install SP2 without having the MSOCache in place.

As far as I know I've never deleted anything in the MSOCache. I use CCleaner - maybe it does although I can not find that I've selected it to do so.

Since copying the .msi file from the DVD does not help - the only solution for me will be to uninstall Office, install again and apply the update?
