Solved "the default gateway is not available" please help!

i have just installed a new copy of windows 7 ultimate 32bit, and after the third or fourth time turning my computer on, and anywhere from 5 to 25 minutes my internet fails. i run the windows network diagnostics, and it says: "the default gateway is not available" and that seems to fix it for 5 to 10 minutes and then i get the same message again. the last time i had this problem, i disabled my wireless card, and it worked fine, but i tried it again to no avail (I'm using an Ethernet cable). my router is a linksys e1000, and my Ethernet cable is about 100 ft, running from my living room to my room. sorry for all of the random information, as i did not quite know what to include.

Hello and welcome the weasels mate this is quite an old machine I take it? - have you checked the drivers for the wireless?
Go into the Device Manager and open it up and check the Network adapters as in the pic any yellow triangles means it is not working properly.

Let us know what the device is because getting the driver for it is better done via the manufacturer.

This could be a driver issue as ICit2lol has said or it may be a physical issue. I noticed that your ipconfig shows your ethernet connection only, are you having issues with your ethernet connection or your wireless connection?

I noticed that you are using your ISPs public DNS servers, I couldn't find a DNS response from them however that could be due to me not being their ISP I do not know. As a temporary measure can you change your DNS servers to Google's public DNS servers and see if that changes anything.

Primary: 8.8.8.8

Alternate: 8.8.4.4

If this resolves the issue then please apply the changes into your routers settings so that all hosts can receive the new servers. That being said if other machines are able to connect to the internet then DNS is probably not the issue but rather a driver as previously stated or a physical issue.

Hmm good link Josh will have to remember that one. Otherwise I was just under the impression it was the wireless connection as I think the OP says the cable connection is ok.

I am just wondering now if the wireless adaptor is perhaps a bit suspect.

I wish we knew what the mobo was as then it would be just matter of seeing what sort of wireless set up there is.

Plus I think 2GB RAM is a tad on the very minimum size for running the Ultimate even in 32bit mode.

Aye, reading it I couldn't be sure what interface has an issue. I am hoping that the wireless adapter is disabled because the ipconfig doesn't show it

WOW!! 100 ft of ethernet cable? I know the stuff is supposed to be good out to 300 ft, but ...WOW!! Is there any way you can get some shorter cable lengths? The longest I work with, at home, is 25 ft., and I don't like THAT to be so far. Is your home really that big?

Can you connect wirelessly? Try it. Re-enable the wireless adapter and try to connect. If you're successful, do an ipconfig /all again, and post the results.

I can see that the wireless NIC isn't showing up because you disabled it.

The DNS in most cases is best handled by the router so typing in DNS info into the IPv4 properties isn't really required at all provided that you entered two valid DNS servers into your routers set up page. Ideally you would see the default gateway IP show up under the DNS settings in the ipconfig.

I don't think we are very sure which connection is having the problem, the wireless is disabled so I assume the Ethernet is having a problem as well? 100ft of Ethernet cable is no problem at all, I'm using the same length here.


There are many other possible causes of this problem, many of which are listed in the link below.

You can try typing the gateway IP "192.168.1.1" into the IPv4 properties "directions for this in the link". Often times this problem can be fixed by simply resetting the router and the modem.

thanks for all of your posts. my motherboard is an Intel black creek d955xbk. i did have my wireless adapter disabled, because it seemed to solve the problem the last time this happened. at the end of this post i will include an updated ipconfig /all with my wireless adapter enabled. i can get online fine with my wireless adapter, however it is extremely slow, which is a problem because i like multiplayer gaming. i looked online to find some drivers for my mobo, but all they had for win7 was a RAID driver, since my mobo has been discontinued. i am aware that i dont have alot of ram, in fact, that was the next thing that i was going to buy, but im tight for money right now. i have already tried what chev65 linked me to, but that didnt seem to work. also peaB4yougo, i dont really think the size of my house is relevant in this situation. i would also like to clarify that this problem is with my wired internet connection, and not my wireless.

Cripes thought the cable was ok from one of the earlier posts?? But looks like I got it wrong then suggest you download the driver for that router again and the LAN driver for the motherboard.
