USB ports disconnecting / Keyboard stopped typing some letters

Hello,

I have 2 problems and would love to hear your thoughts. (Bold)
Before couple weeks ago, my mouse started to act weird, like it stops moving for couple second and I hear the sound of a new device plugged in then it goes back to work, afterwards ... it stopped going back, a restart was a must for it to continue working EVEN THO the mouse lights were still on.

In few days, the keyboard of the laptop it self (built in) stopped typing some letters (back-space, enter, D, I), I've booted into a portable OS and the keys weren't working too, I assume it's hardware problem.

I went and bought new mouse and an external keyboard, the same USB problem that happened with the old mouse happened, I thought it could be some drivers or some software interupting, I formatted my PC and the problem still persists! BUT I do not remember the USB disconnecting or any sort when the windows was FRESH and not connected to the internet (were some drivers could be installed through windows itself).

Laptop is N53SN ASUS Laptop.

- Built-in keyboard: any thoughts? And what shall I do about it? Replace or is there something I can do other than replacing?
- USB disconnection, the lights still work on both keyboard and the mouse when they disconnect, I have disabled the "Power management setting" that makes the PC turn off the USB ports for power-saving.

Hello and welcome Killer mate no need to get a new KB yet a few more specs would be handy though mate.

Now assuming you haven't tried them out have you downloaded the drivers for either the external KB - presuming again it is a specified manufacturer or the inbuilt KB?

I don't know, but the D/Enter/Back-space isn't even working at BIOS menu, sooo drivers really wont make sense right?

Laptop is about 2 years old, and I am now more concerned about the USB :/

Now is that correct for both KB's the external and the inbuilt ones?
The drivers I would certainly update the USB and chipset my friend and if the external KB manufacturers driver.

Another thing would be to run some security over the machine too.

Seeing that ref that gives the system specs have you got a lot of add on freeware on the machine?

Only for the built-in, the external works normally.

My computer is clean, and it is secured, I just formatted it as I mentioned before, it's not a virus or any add-on that's interrupting...

Hmm it was just a thought Killer and they are ones that donot take long to run but if the machine is clean well maybe the inbuilt key board isfaulty. Just seems odd the problem started out of the blue.
Replacing it should be quite straight forward if the Asus is anything like replacing Toshiba KB's and the other Asus gear in general.

I still think the drivers should be done and I am not a fan of the Windows updating feature to be honest but the choice is yours.

Yes possibly mate you could try to very gently clean the ports out using a piece of credit card (thin strip with a piece of thin lint free cloth over the end of it and a tad of alcohol of some description (iso propyl is good) and insert the cleaner into the port and again very GENTLY clean them as they are so easy to break especially that small "tongue" they have inside. I guess you could even use a thin cable tie or tooth pick as well bt be careful.

Well that sort of points the finger at the USB plug, it's cable , or the KB itself you may have to work back from the plug Killer.

Now if you are ok with it you can test the connectivity of the plug and KB by undoing the KB and trying a multi meter resistance test between the plug and the KB end (connection). Do the same with the power connections and the data ones too.

How did all the ports had the same issue, in the same time? I don't think it has to do with the pins in the USB itself.. I have got about 4 USB 2.0 and they all act the same, if it was one I would say maybe, but 4? :/

Well Killer there is only one thing left in my mind and that is thee drivers for that board for USB, chipset, VGA and the touchpad. The BIOS might even need updating though generally speaking I leave it to last and always back up before I do that BIOS updating. .

Worse case scenario - could be the board is going bad.

Try the drivers again and see.

Ok mate let sleeping dogs lie but don't be surprised if it pops up again as it sort of seems to be pointing at a connection or connections not being up to the job - loose or the solder has gone "dry" causing an intermittent contact.
