In order to tidy up I have made some alterations to my computer recently by running virus checkers Avast, Malwarebytes Anti-malware, and Ccleaner. I have also discarded Firefox because I thought it had imported some rubbish ("start.myresearch dial). My problem is that now I cannot open directly my preferred internet provider (Opera) or my other available providers (Internet Explorer, Google, or Avant). These are normally accessed via desktop icons. When an icon is selected the desktop does not change and the cursor changes to the rotating ball which normally indicates the computer is working on the selected task and, if I try to initiate some other task the desktop colours become pale and the computer does not respond to any other selection, including Start (to try to log-off) or Ctrl-Alt-Del. The only way to close down is to press and hold the power button.

On restart, I can select any of the four options offered and, by Choosing Safe Mode, I can use any of the internet providers to carry out my normal daily on-line activities. In fact, this message has been sent by this means.

I have also used the Advanced Startup options to run Startup Repair and no problems were identified. Where should I go from here? This is a problem which has only occurred in the last few days.

My system : Windows 7 Home Premium, Service pack 1; Dell XPS 8100, Processor Intel i5, 3.2 Ghz; 6.o GB RAM, Multi-GB of Hard Disk, 64 Bit operating system.

Have you tried choosing a default browser? You stated you used desktop icons of different sites to open your web browser. Do you have a default browser set under start-default programs?

Your awesome for reading this.
It sounds like you have been tinkering ;) If you have a System restore point from before all the fiddling, that may be the easiest way out.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html

Barring that, I would run the System File Checker

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

Since the browers run in safe mode, if the above is nno help, try a clean start to see if you can discover a conflict

Thank you for the replies which I am gradually working on.

To Thrashzone. I have tried to work carefully through your suggestions, no ad-ons etc, and these have provided a result which has enabled me to use my referred web-browser withmuch success. I have followed on using Avast Antivirus to clean up any worthless files. However, I found that on booting up I
was still getting some delays and unwanted messages. RealPlayer opened on the desk top unasked. I then used the "clean boot" advice but found the process very tedious and, after several repetitions, I resorted to almost total disabling of the contents of the "Services" list and in "Startup" in MsConfig. Real Player no longer takes over the opening page on Boot up.

To andrew129260: I had already tried other browsers before Iwrote my first message to this forum. See my list in the first message. In fact, at that stage I could only reach the internet if I booted up in safe mode.

To A Guy: Tinkering! Is that what you call responding to program update suggestions. My problems first started when IE 12 was updated and Opera updated from version 12 to 15 . Followed by updates to other programs. Yes I probably added other programs and subsequently removed them. Thanks for your helpful advice about the use of SFC /Scannow (verifyonly) which I have used This program ran without ceasing up but I found some problems which are hidden away in a log file that I cannot open. The computer does not believe I have Administrator rights even though I have opened C:\Windows\ accessories, etc using the appropriate command and located the log file.

Thank you all again, and I will report back when I have at least 99% success.

Based on your 1st sentence it appeared so, I meant no offense by it.

IE12 =? IE10?

Yes, I am still on Opera 12, I don't like the path they have taken with my favorite browser :(

If you follow OPTION THREE on the SFC tutorial, it will place a sfcdetails.txt on your desktop which you can access, and upload here if you wish. A Guy

To A.Guy, thank you for your addiional advice. I have managed to open the sfcdetails.txt on screen but it is a rather big text file, 180 Kb, since the "sfc" program detected a lot errors. I am unable to copy it to a Sevenforums message and I cannot transform it to a format that can be copied. I suppose I could use SFC/SCANNOW which I understand will analyse and repair the startup files but I feel that I would be wandering into unfamiliar territory.

I suppose I need to be patient and wait for some further advice. Thank you all for the continuing interest.

Problem Solved.

The basic problem was the failure of the wireless adapter - now replaced, but most recent updates corrupted. Nevertheless I can now connect to the internet.
