In order to tidy up I have made some alterations to my computer recently by running virus checkers Avast, Malwarebytes Anti-malware, and Ccleaner. I have also discarded Firefox because I thought it had imported some rubbish ("start.myresearch dial). My problem is that now I cannot open directly my preferred internet provider (Opera) or my other available providers (Internet Explorer, Google, or Avant). These are normally accessed via desktop icons. When an icon is selected the desktop does not change and the cursor changes to the rotating ball which normally indicates the computer is working on the selected task and, if I try to initiate some other task the desktop colours become pale and the computer does not respond to any other selection, including Start (to try to log-off) or Ctrl-Alt-Del. The only way to close down is to press and hold the power button.
On restart, I can select any of the four options offered and, by Choosing Safe Mode, I can use any of the internet providers to carry out my normal daily on-line activities. In fact, this message has been sent by this means.
I have also used the Advanced Startup options to run Startup Repair and no problems were identified. Where should I go from here? This is a problem which has only occurred in the last few days.
My system : Windows 7 Home Premium, Service pack 1; Dell XPS 8100, Processor Intel i5, 3.2 Ghz; 6.o GB RAM, Multi-GB of Hard Disk, 64 Bit operating system.

If you have a System restore point from before all the fiddling, that may be the easiest way out.
