No network access for Xbox 360 (Failed IP Address)

The ping test results mean either an IP address is not properly configured, a bad or incorrect cable (You need a crossover cable). Or you may have configured the wrong interface. Are you connected to the internet on laptop at all?

I have a feeling that the Xbox isn't meant to have a point to point connection...

Have you recently tried the Internet connection sharing? If so, do you have issues with internet connectivity?

Can you change the default gateway on the Xbox to:

172.16.1.12 {IP address of laptop}

Once done, try to do the same ping as before, what are the results?

On the cable, you should see 8 small wires in an arrangement of colours at both ends. Can you check carefully and confirm that on both ends the order of the small wires are different? If not and are in exactly the same order then the cable may well be the problem.

An XBOX, much like a Desktop can handle a P2P connection. We do it here at Job Corp all the time. Though the older style XBOX's have a major headache.

What version of XBOX 360 do you have? I know that plugging my Samsung Galaxy S4 directly to my computer gives it internet access. I'm not sure if it'll work, but can you plug your phone directly to your XBOX 360, and set the wifi on?

My opinion, tethering an entire network to a phone is absolutely ridiculous.

Expecting such a network to be reliable is equally absurd.

Purchase a router and get a real ISP. Rant over problem solved.

Aha, I agree! A proper routed network would make life a lot easier!

I feel that the issue is on the Xbox side with it needing a valid default gateway but that wouldn't explain why it suddenly stopped after a windows update... Hmmm .... Gonna think on this one a bit more

Yeah, that's the only thing that's changed (but I don't even get a System Restore option).

Just tried and obtained the same results as before (four packets sent, four lost (100% loss)).

Yeah, WMP is set up for sharing - I've just checked to make sure.

To be completely honest, I agree with you. It's just that we don't currently own a router with internet connection and it's not as simple as purchasing one and getting a real ISP when money's the way it is in my house, so.. I don't really have much of a choice at the minute.

It could be, but I encountered this problem on more than one Xbox, so I can't be sure.
I honestly think it could just be my laptop though.

Just to clarify are you using a crossover cable for the Xbox or are you using a regular Ethernet cable. If I'm not mistaken if you try to connect point to point with a Xbox you need a crossover cable but if you are using a router you do not. Also if you have a desktop at you house with a router have you tried to connect your phone to your desktop the share the connection with an Ethernet jack connected to the router. that might save a lot of headaches or just cause more.

I believe he stated, above your post, that he did not, in fact have a router.


Anyways, have you checked the general things like a Firewall, Anti-Virus, etc? I know Windows Defender, and Microsoft Essentials blocks the hell out of my Samsung Galaxy S4. And its soley because its a modded OS.

If I were you, I would reset to defaults, if possible, and try it all again. The Crossover cable might work, and it might not. Using your laptop as a router is a bad thing, it isn't meant for this sort of thing.

I suggest getting the internet working on the laptop, and then move to the xbox. If its at all possible, with your money situation, to buy a XBOX 360 compatible Wireless device. It'll help with a lot of things.

Just curious because I am having exact same problem trying to connect the exact same way you are. And like you it started to happen all of the sudden. You wouldn't haven to trying to connect through an AT&T phone would you?
