FastPictureViewer is a very powerful (and outrageously fast) photo viewer for both x86/x64 based systems. It has a lot of unique features and as a long-time ACDSee user, I found the latest versions too bloated, I'm happy to have found this replacement.

Features:

- Free for non-commercial use
- Full Windows 7 support and available in both x86/x64 versions
- Full multi-core support
- Full GPU support to assist it quickly rendering images
- Supports virtually all image formats
- Plugin support
- Very slim footprint but extremely powerful
- Entirely free of ad/mal/spy ware
- ...many more

The site can be found here and a demonstration video can be viewed here.

EDIT: The author has annouced a promotion, it's a great deal.

Seems like nice software.

Oh, I couldn't agree more. The more I use it (and learn how to use it) the more amazed I am. As a pure image viewer, it's unparalleled in it's speed and function. As an image management tool, it has a fresh approach that is intuitive and fast. Learning its features reveals its real power.

I can honestly say [begin geek shame] I'm actually excited about this new software.[end geek shame]

Seriously, try it out. ;)

Ah thank goodness =) I am increasingly reluctant to install ACDSee and like you have been using it for many years -but I am over its ever-increasing girth =P

This looks like just what I need - thanks heaps for the heads up!

Seeing as ACDSee is running a free access to the Beta, and that I personally use IrfanView (as it is still the fastest I have found) I may have to try this in conjunction with the ACDSee Beta and compare all three - if I ever get any time.

Good find, m8

Interesting, I'll have to check it out some time.

Another great fast and free image view (although not native x64) is Faststone Image Viewer. I really like the speed and interface. Been using it as default image viewer for a while now on W7 x64. First heard about it on DPreview.com forums where many pro photographers who use apps like photoshop and lightroom for editing seem to like it for basic image viewing (although it has many editing functions).

What I especially like about it (aside from speed/reliability and support for all raw formats etc.) is that it can be set to auto open images in full screen and its menus and informational displays are hidden (so nothing obscures or interferes with the totally full screen image). But when you want to see info or use menus, they instantly "flyout" when the mouse cursor is moved to the edge of the screen. And also that it can be configured so the scroll wheel will control zooming in & out without having to hold down any other key. Navigation with keys is very intuitive and one can move from viewing an image in FS image viewer directly to one's preferred external editing app.

Hi there
UNFORTUNATELY the piece I need -- RAW IMAGE viewer is a "Pay for" feature.
After the trial the image viewer is only good for JPEGS - Windows explorer can already do that BTW.

Software is good but I don't need to PAY for it.

As I already have Photoshop (CS4) and Adobe Bridge I can view RAW images already - although not as fast as the software mentioned in the OP.

How do these viewers handles folders with a large number of images? I have some folders with upwards of 30,000 images. ACDSee handles it quite well, although there is definitely a performance hit. Things like Adobe are brought to their knees with this large number of images, at least in terms of image browsing.

Fast Picture Viewer | WIC RAW Codec Pack for Windows 7, Vista and XP

Allows you to view raw image formats without the installation of yet another 3rd party viewer.

Back in XP, Microsoft had a RAW picture viewer codec http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...8E-B10D-4CE4-A141-5866FD4A3286&displaylang=en . I haven't tried installing it on Windows 7 but you might try it out in compatibility mode to see if it works.

Gildor, I was running into problems with ACDSee and huge image folders, the .db would always crash no matter what I tried. With FPV, it's not an issue and is significantly faster. You actually have to use it to 'feel' the difference.

good software. very fast.
sadly totaly useless if you dont have a Internet connection.
no way for it to call home and verify its free to itself
(just a scary idea in itself. free is free why would it need to phone home to be free)
may as well be trial ware with the two annoying popups it asks every time it starts
"can i please phone home to verify im free..."
"i cant verify im free ill try again next time you start me"
but other wise useful, if you trust the author.
