System locks up shortly after boot

Recently (2 days ago) My computer locked up and became unresponsive while trying to run a virtual machine via VMware Player, at first it was just explorer.exe, then shortly after all other programs followed down the same path. The system runs perfectly in safe mode, so i ran virus scans, finding a few minor infections, removed them, and ran CCleaner. I rebooted the system, the problem had not gone away. I have tried to go to a previous restore point while in safe mode, everything seems to work fine but when i log in normally I get an error stating that the restore failed because it was unable to find a file (something to do with bittorrent client).
This same error has occurred on every saved restore point and the problem remains. I would love to avoid reformatting the system but if necessary I will.

Thank you in advance,

I have disabled VMware, as-well as most of my startup programs. I have even gone as far as uninstalling Vmware

Work through the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 to establish a Clean Boot, check for infection, test hardware, test system files, check the logs for repeat errors to resolve, utilize the System Resources to check for Problems and Generate a System Health Report.

Report back what you find as you go as other steps may be indicated.

Type Solutions in Start Search box. Before Checking for Solutions, click on View Problems to Repair. For serious unresolved problems, view Technical Details, copy to Clipboard, paste into Notepad, save and attach in reply box.

Generate a System Health Report and continue with all other steps.
